Chapter 8

Landon – Day 3

Landon requested the driver take him to “One Baybreeze Road, please.” It was time for him to do what he had been avoiding for nine months: decide what he would do with his late uncle’s oceanfront estate on Long Bay and spread his ashes there.

The driver pulled out of The White Sands Paradise Resort and drove the eight minutes to the other side of the narrow island. As they pulled to a stop, Landon stared out the window at the twelve thousand square foot house. He’d been there before, but that was when Uncle Thomas was alive and waiting for him in the circular driveway. Today, he would let himself into the luxury home proudly built eleven years ago. It had been Uncle Thomas’ paradise, spending more time here than any of the other homes he’d owned. Providenciales of Turks and Caicos was his favorite place to be and would now be where his ashes were spread.

After thanking the driver, Landon tucked the precious box under his arm and entered the phenomenal home with the code left in the will. The last request of Uncle Thomas was also stated in the will: Landon was to spend three months on the island after spreading the ashes before he could decide what to do with the home and any of his uncle’s local business endeavors on the island and elsewhere.

Once inside the foyer, he pushed the double oak doors closed behind him and admired the crisp white walls and creamy marble floors. The gray and white furniture with accents of black and natural wood spoke of Uncle Thomas’ love for modern design. Landon’s footsteps echoed in the empty home. Music and laughter used to reverberate off the walls when his uncle was here. Friends were always welcome, and therefore the house had never been empty—until nine months ago when Uncle Thomas had fallen victim to a sudden heart attack. The caretaker, Clarence found him the next morning. The phone call from Clarence was the worst phone call Landon had ever answered. His beloved uncle, mentor, confidant, and friend was gone. The pain stung then and now more so as Landon walked toward the kitchen in deafening silence.

His heart sank into his chest and his breathing was shallow. It was even harder than he thought to be on the island and now in his uncle’s home. Visions of that last visit Landon made here two years ago flashed. He had come to help Uncle Thomas with a business acquisition. Landon had drafted the paperwork and represented him for the deal. He had been honored to be trusted by Uncle Thomas to run the entire transaction.

On the counter sat a picture of Uncle Thomas, Landon, and his sister Sedona from five years ago at Christmas. A sigh escaped his lips. He turned from the memory of big smiles and happy times to the sliding glass door that offered the best view he’d ever seen of the Caribbean Sea. Blue waters existed as far as the eye could see.
