CHAPTER 24

USS Hamilton – Pleidian Weonan Fringe Frontier Space

XO Gail Pristy

She waited for Coogong’s reply.

“Please, let me better understand your request. You want me to show you how to transport a member of your crew, a Captain nonetheless, into Hamilton’s – MATHR’s – virtual memory? Oh, I do not think I can do that, Lieutenant. I am sorry.”

She looked back over her shoulder into the Bridge. Every second counted. Tannock was obviously mentally impaired and was hellbent on going to battle with a Grish fleet – one that outnumbered Hamilton eighteen to one. That, and she’d had explicit orders not to engage the enemy under any circumstances.

“Well, how about you just show me how the thing works . . . what buttons to press? I’m already somewhat familiar with the original port entanglers.”

“I will show you how to use the PE-2 device only as intended. To transfer inanimate, or animate, matter from one location to another here on the ship.”

“Fine. And thank you, Coogong. I’m on my way up to Deck 29 now . . .”

She gave one last look back into the Bridge. The Halo-Display showed they were still a good distance from the enemy. She had a few minutes – a very few minutes. Now, sprinting down Whale’s Alley, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. Out of breath, she said, “Idiot!” She called Coogong back on her TAC-Band.

“Lieutenant?”

“Coogong! Transport me to the Science and Technology Department. Please, do it now.”

She wasn’t all that sure it could actually be done; this was sort of like a one-way ticket to a place without having been transported there via the PE-2 beforehand. She recollected that it may be a prerequisite – or was it? But there again, she knew Coogong and Hardy had been making further modifications, enhancements, prior to the mission down to Unero.

“Prepare for transport, Lieutenant.”

She felt off-kilter, sick like she was going to hurl. And in that instant, she knew the transport process had begun. Begun and, evidently, ended. She was now standing upon the PE-2 pedestal within the Science and Technology Department laboratory. She looked about the compartment and saw the stick figure Coogong as well as the strange-looking Sir Louis de Broglie. She wanted to reprimand the old scientist – tell him that his meddlesome actions had put the ship and the lives of everyone on board in jeopardy. But there was no time for that now. She stepped down from the pedestal and joined Coogong at the adjacent console.

“No theory, Coogong . . . just down and dirty nuts to bolts directions on using this interface.”

Coogong bowed his helmeted head. He started by explaining each aspect of the control board – how to initialize the display and retrieve previous transport data. She saw all the crewmember names of those who had transported down to Unero, as well as Captain Tannock’s retrieval from MATHR’s virtual memory. She also saw her own transport listing from just moments before. It took another five minutes to go over the individual configuration settings and the actual transport process.
