Nolan hung up the phone, grabbed a sweatshirt and pulled it on, then went out his front door and sat on the steps to watch for Alexandra. He couldn’t imagine what would have upset her so much, but Zack McBride wasn’t known to exaggerate. If she didn’t show up in the next ten minutes, Nolan intended to go looking for her.

Two minutes later he heard her coming. From the low, furious sound of her muttering, he concluded the walk hadn’t calmed her down. When she marched into view with her head down, arms swinging like a power walker’s, he suspected she could have stomped all the way to Cody and it wouldn’t have helped much.

He waited to speak until she’d just passed his front walkway.

“Hi, Alex. Nice night for a walk.”

She halted, turned her head toward him, then said something he couldn’t hear, did an abrupt about-face and stomped back toward town. Nolan jumped off the steps and ran after her. He reached for her and she turned on him, hitting and cursing like a demented thing.

“Alex.” He shielded his face with a forearm and wrapped his other arm around her waist. “Alexandra, stop.”

“Don’t touch me. Let me go. I have to go kill that son of a bitch right now.”

“Kill who? Zack?”

“Yes, dammit. Zack and Dillon and Blair and Miz Hannah.”

“Will you stop hitting me?” Nolan grabbed her flailing hands and trapped them between their bodies. “Zack and Dillon, I can probably understand, but why would you want to kill Blair and sweet old Miz Hannah?”

“They’re all a part of it,” she said, panting as she struggled to free her hands again. “It’s a big fat conspiracy.”

“How much did you have to drink?” he asked.

“That’s right, you buzzard.” She twisted her whole torso, but he managed to hang on to her. “Go ahead and laugh at me, too. Just like the rest of them.”

Her voice broke then, and so did her heart. It sounded that way, anyway, when the fury in her eyes dimmed and her face crumpled in on itself and a ragged cry rose from her throat. He raised one hand to the back of her head and pressed her face into the crook of his shoulder.

Her whole body shook with the force of her sobs and her tears dampened the front of his sweatshirt. She wept on and on, as if she had an endless supply of heartache and gallons of tears to shed. He rocked her back and forth, stroking her hair and crooning wordless, comforting sounds to her that he had once crooned to his son.

“Shhh. Alexandra, sweetheart, don’t,” he said, hugging her closer. “You’ll make yourself sick.”

She raised her head from his shoulder and glared at him from red, swollen eyes. “You’re damn right, I’m sick. I’m sick and tired of being treated like a slow child. I’m sick of this damn, stupid little town and everybody in it.”

“I believe you,” he said. “Why don’t you come inside and tell me what happened tonight?”

“Oh, Nolan.
