“What’s wrong with Spears? She’s acting weird. I’m so worried!” I panicked in front of the desk at the veterinarian’s office.

“I’m sorry, let me get the vet for you. I know you’re worried, miss, but please calm down,” the vet tech said with her hands up in supplication as if I was being a Karen—which I wasn’t. I was a worried dog mother!

“What do you mean calm down? How can I calm down when my yorkipoo is flopping in my arms like this. Look at her!” I cried, my anxiety climbing higher by the second, my poor Spears’ head flip flopping like a rag doll.

A second vet tech returned with the man I assumed ran the place. His face was a little shallow and he had dark bags under his eyes. Geez. How was I to trust this man with my Spears? He looked like he hadn’t slept in a year and forgot to eat.

Everyone in the lobby held their animals close to them as they listened in on our conversation out in the open.

“What seems to be—dawg, what’s wrong with your dog? That don’t look right,” he finished after cutting himself off the moment he saw Spears.

I shoved my yorkipoo to his face and cried some more. “That’s what I want to know! Help me, doctor! Wake her up!”

“Miss. Miss. First of all, what in the world is a yorkipoo? Secondly, let’s get you to the back and see what’s going on.”

He sounded too calm. And how could he not know what a yorkipoo was? It was only the most popular designer dog back home! My eyes burned with more tears. That was the problem, wasn’t it? I wasn't back home anymore. I was in the south.

He led me to one of the exam rooms and closed the door behind us, signaling for me to place Spears on the table. With a sniff, I gently laid her down, caressing her soft hair and trying to calm myself.

It’s okay, girl. We’re here. We made it to the vet and he’s going to fix her right up.

“Did she get into the trash or anything?” He asked, bringing his weird light tool in his gloved hand to look into her ear.

“No, I feed her nothing but the best. At least, I try to. I feed her things I would want to eat—if I were a dog, I mean. But I mean, I’m her doggy mother, so I take great care in—”

“I mean, I’m not the best out there, but I can offer you something that might wake her up.” The vet looked left and right and I wrinkled my brow before looking in the same directions. There was nothing around us. We were the only ones in the room.

He leaned in and covered his mouth toward me as if whispering secrets and I looked at him strangely.

“I got some stuff in my trunk I could sell to ya. If you want, I mean. No pressure…”

“Will it wake Spears up?” It was my only concern.
