Ryder gazed at Carina. Her face had gone chalk white. Why would the mob be after her? That made no sense...unless the investigation into Carinaâs parents had missed the connection of one or both of them to organized crime.
Carinaâs eyes met his then darted away. Bright color drove the pallor from her cheeks. She was a smart woman. No doubt she was wondering the same thing about her parents. Not a feel-good moment.
âI think we need to interview the detective who was in charge of the case,â Ryder told Graham. âIs he around?â
âDetective Cliff Sounder? Heâs retired, but still lives in Tulsa. I can give him a call. See if heâd be okay to meet with you.â
âWe appreciate it.â He nodded at Graham.
âYes, thanks for everything,â Carina said, her tone sincere but brittle as thin glass.
The detective left with the evidence box and Ryder was left with Carina frowning at him.
âWhy would we need to interview the detective who handled my familyâs case when weâve already seen the reports?â she asked. âIsnât that a waste of time?â
Her voice held a growl, but Ryder couldnât take her attitude personally. She was afraid, with good reason. And now fresh suspicion had been thrown onto her familyâs integrity, just when sheâd felt settled in her mind about them.
Ryder nodded and offered a small smile. âItâs possible we wonât find out anything new from Sounder, but we very well might. What makes it into written reports needs to be either cold, hard facts or at least logical assumptions or lines of inquiry suggested by those facts. The detectiveâs gut feelings and impressions often go into personal notes or get filed away in the back of the investigatorâs mind, but donât necessarily make it onto the official pages.â
The tension around Carinaâs mouth faded. âAll right, then letâs go see this guy.â
âI hope we can do it over breakfast.â Ryder patted his midsection. âIâm hungry.â
âMe, too.â Carina smiled, and her golden eyes lit up.
Ryderâs heart expanded as if the sun had beamed down upon him. There wasnât much he wouldnât do to keep seeing that expression on her face.
Rein it in, buddy.
Heâd only known the woman and her son for a day and half, and he was already thinking like a besotted oaf. Letting his feelings become personal was a great way to lose his focus and get her killed. No way could he let that happen. If she didnât survive physically, he wouldnât survive mentally. So what if his emotions took a hit when this was over and she walked away? At least he would know that this time heâd preserved a life that bad guys had wanted to steal.
The door opened and Graham stepped inside. âSounder jumped at the opportunity to talk to you. The lack of closure in the case has always weighed on him. Letâs get you down to the locker rooms so you can freshen up and change. The meetâs all set up for forty-five minutes from now at a little mom-and-pop café up the street.
