Chapter five

The next day, Audrey returned to Dr. Mendel’s website. There, at the bottom, was an email address. She composed her email.

**

To: Dr. Alice Mendel

From: Audrey Heartwood

Subject: CryoNeuroTech

Dear Dr. Mendel,

My name’s Audrey Heartwood and I’m a new client of CryoNeuroTech. I have a few questions about CryoNeuroTech and was hoping we could meet to discuss your experience with and impressions of them?

Regards,

Audrey

**

A response seemed doubtful. After all, Dr. Mendel had no reason to help Audrey. She’d left CryoNeuroTech and, regardless of the reason, was probably glad to be rid of them.

Throughout the day, every time her phoned pinged, Audrey was on it immediately to see if it was an email from Dr. Mendel.

It was hours later when she finally, and rather unexpectedly, received an answer.

**

To: Audrey Heartwood

From: Dr. Alice Mendel

Subject: Re: CryoNeuroTech

Dear Ms. Heartwood,

I’d be happy to inform you of my dealings with CryoNeuroTech. I’ll send you a virtual appointment invite. Let me know if the time doesn’t work for you.

Regards,

Dr. A. Mendel.

Audrey grinned. She only had to wait five days for the meeting.

The week went at a snail’s pace. She tried focussing on teaching rather than thinking about CryoNeuroTech or George. But every time she wasn’t otherwise engaged, her mind leapt to all her conversations with Claire, George, and Gulliver and the videos she watched. Several times per day, she questioned why she cared about Unshackled Intelligence. After all, it had nothing to do with her existential crisis. But she hated the idea of giving herself—literally—to a company insisting on hiding their doings. She had to know what was going on.

Finally, the day of her meeting with Dr. Mendel arrived. Dr. Mendel joined the meeting moments after Audrey, wearing a blue Hawaiian shirt. Behind her was a queen-sized bed with a bag of luggage.

Dr. Mendel pulled back her long black hair. “So, you’re the curious Audrey Heartwood.” There wasn’t a smile.

“Yes. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me.”

Dr. Mendel nodded. “I’m happy to do so. All consumers should be as careful as you with their decisions and research. Though, that said, you should’ve waited until finishing your research before signing on the dotted line.”

Audrey blinked, not expecting an admonishment from a stranger. “I did. I’ve read G—Dr. Thompson’s research for years. Before I booked an appointment, I researched as much as possible. That’s how I came across you and your article about ethical responsibility. The employee I met answered all my questions to my satisfaction.”

Dr. Mendel pursed her lips. “And you signed everything but…still have questions?”

“Yes. After I signed, I saw a sign for an Unshackled Intelligence Division. It was clearly new and an employee who went through the door was very obviously shielding the nameplate from me. I expected to hear about the division at last week’s event, but I didn’t.”

Dr. Mendel’s expression gave nothing away. She stared into the camera for a good half a minute before saying, “I will be upfront, Ms. Heartwood. CryoNeuroTech fired me because I was uncomfortable with the direction they were going.
