“Well, there’s good news and bad news,” Tejnu said, shifting in his seat again. He needed a better chair—one that was easier on his bruises.

“Go on,” Mori said.

“The good news is that Ren set up the reveal on hon Dilzne perfectly. The bad news is that she got wind of the investigation and has disappeared. The good news about that is that Elite are now convinced she’s behind the attacks on Ren and me, and the heat is off us completely. More than that, they’re chasing down her known associates.”

“But the bad news is that they won’t find out what we have,” Mori said. “Worse news is she’s a former member of the Reven, and we believe she’s formed a new group, based in the Tsikeni region. We’ve traced a number of connections between her and known and possible paranormals—it’s potentially a network of over a hundred people, and who knows how many more than that. Good news—we no longer think their ambitions are political.”

“Bad news—we don’t know what their ambitions really are?”

Mori nodded. “I’m coming up there, Teji. Now that suspicion is off you, there’s no reason for me not to.”

“A dramatic reconciliation, then?”

Mori’s lips twitched. “Well, a proposed re-merger with a cautious lessening of hostilities. Helmin wants to keep our options open.”

“I bet,” Tejnu said, sighing. Still—Mori was coming to Tsikeni. That was something.

“And the Dual Soul?”

“Ah. More bad news—he’s making nice with the moronic ex, who’s pretending to be protecting him. I’ve seen Ren twice since I got out of hospital, and neither time for sex, so no more information from him. Elite has frozen our contract temporarily—everything’s under lock down—”

“They won’t find anything, will they?”

Tejnu tsked. “Oh, please, Mori—remember who you’re talking to, and who we’re dealing with. They had an associate of hon Kermu working right there and did they spot her? Did they work out who was bugging Ren without help? They couldn’t find their arses with both hands. Of course they won’t find anything. If you feed me those names, hon Dilzne’s contacts, I’ll see what Elite’s datastore has on them.”

“We need to get a location, then we can point Elite there and let them cause mayhem. The Council’s orders are not to engage this group directly at any level. Protect hon Parmin, protect yourselves. That’s straight from Helmin himself.”

“Hah, and I know which order he said them in too.” Mori gave him a look. “Fine, fine, pain makes me tetchy.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Better. I’m coming to the office in the mornings, though there’s not much to do while Elite has us shut out. Bloody arm aches non-stop.”

“I’m sorry. Are you still being scanned? Could you not take some pain pills?”

“Still being scanned, and no—but the worst is behind me. I’ll survive. When are you coming up?”

“I’ll leave in the morning. I’ll be there two days later. I’ll be staying at an inn for discretion’s sake, but we can meet in public—my people will contact your people,” Mori said, smiling wryly.

“I can’t wait. It’s been too long.
