Chapter Ten

“They did a great job on your leg,” Matt said as he examined the scars on Keith’s calf. “Do you have any problems with it?”

Keith shook his head. “When it’s cold it gets a little tight. I was put on a limited profile afterward – I can’t run like I used to.”

“And they were able to remove all the shrapnel?”

“Yeah, most of it just grazed me. Only a few pieces were embedded in my calf. I got a nice scar on my cheek.” Keith smiled and stroked his beard, “But this covers it up.”

“Any problems with flashbacks, anger, or anything like that?”

Keith shook his head. “I’m doing fine.”

“Retirement is going okay?”

Keith paused before nodding his head.

“I saw that hesitation. Are you sure?”

“I’m not sure I was ready to retire, but we had to. Hannah’s grandmother needed us.” His short choppy answers sounded more like excuses. Matt must have come to the same conclusion.

“Sounds like you still have something you need to work through. Is it affecting your marriage?”

“What?” Keith shook his head, maybe a little too quickly. “We just need to figure out this new life together. That’s all.” His tone sounded glum, even to his own ears.

“Have you all been to counseling?”

“We’ve been there, done that. Three miscarriages and many counselors later, here we are. I need counseling like I need another round of shrapnel in my leg.”

“Maybe you should go seek Biblical counseling. My church offers marriage counseling.”

Keith scratched his beard as he said, “I don’t know. It’s not like we’ve been going to church.”

“You don’t have to be a member to go.”

He hesitated before saying, “I don’t know...”

“Keith, I’ve been where you are. As a friend and as your doctor, I can’t urge you enough to seek counseling before you all hit that point that we did.”

“Divorce.” The word escaped from his lips in a lonely sigh. He was worried they were heading down that path. It felt like someone had strapped him into a ride that he couldn’t get off of. It was slowly climbing to this peak and he was sure at any moment they were going to plunge into the depths of divorce.

“Yeah, but first comes this point where you both think there’s nothing left. You want it to change, but you feel like everything just keeps getting worse.”

“I think we’ve already reached that point.”

“Well, that point is all a lie. You can turn it around. Things can change.”

Keith shook his head, “She’s just so angry all the time. She nags me about everything, and she doesn’t take the time to consider how things are for me. It’s all about her.” Keith scratched his beard before continuing, “I feel like such a jerk for saying it, but we could have had other options with her grandmother. We could have brought her up with us. I could have requested the post near Sheridan. I was even trying to see if they’d let me go on another deployment, even if it was to hang back in the rear with the gear, and she could return here during that year of deployment.
