Itâs my tummy rumbling and the smell of cooked meat that wakens me. The water is beginning to cool, so Iâm not reluctant to climb out of the bath that has warmed me through and relaxed all my tense muscles.
I breathe the smell of steak and roasted vegetables in and hurry to towel off and dress before I get cold, then rush out to enjoy the feast Adam and Ethan have prepared for us.
The atmosphere around the dinner table is almost merry. The air is beginning to warm, and the food is sensational. Juice drips down my chin from the thick cut of steak Iâm working my way through, my second one, but I donât care. It tastes so good. I canât remember the last time I had fresh steak.
Iâm feeling utterly spoiled but I canât squelch my worry about the others who were caught tonight.
âI love it here,â says Connor.
âDonât you always stay here?â I ask.
âNo, we never stay at the same place two times in a row,â says Jake.
âStupid rule,â replies Noah.
âMostly we stay in smelly holes,â says Brody.
âTheyâre not that bad,â replies Bobby.
âTheyâre not that good,â says Connor.
Adam sighs. âWe need to take as few chances of discovery as possible to protect, not only us but also, the people who help us.â
âAnd this is a bit far from where we were meeting, so we havenât been using it much lately,â adds Jake.
I nod. âWhere will they be keeping the people they caught?â I ask.
The last of the merriment leaves the room. The men look at each other with furrowed brows and drawn mouths.
âThey wonât keep them for long,â says Brody.
âYou meanâ¦â
âWhich means we need to rescue them quickly,â says Adam.
âWeâve got about a week,â says Jake.
âWell, thatâs a long time to keep them if theyâre just going to kill them in the end anyway,â I say.
âTheyâll want to get information from them first, Sample,â Liam says gently.
âOh.â
I donât know what else to say, and neither, it seems, does anyone else. The table is deathly quiet, and suddenly the air doesnât feel like it has warmed much at all.
I raise my fork to my mouth, but the thought of taking another mouthful makes me want to gag. I lower my fork to my plate and looking around, realize that Ethanâs the only one still eating.
I donât want to sit here any longer, so when Brody starts clearing the plates, I rise to help him.
