A word from TR Cameron

It all started with the Foundation trilogy. I was searching my Dad’s paperback library, and there they were, calling to me from the top shelf. A short stint of ungraceful acrobatics later (falling, with style), and they were in my hands. From then on, I devoured every bit of science fiction I could find.

Eventually I made the jump to associated genres through The Lord of the Rings and the works of John Le Carre, but you never forget your first love. When my brain finally demanded that I could wait no longer to get writing, there was no question that it had to be science fiction.

I’ve always loved strong female characters, and it always ticks me off to see them in limited roles as the Helper or the Princess in support of the protagonist. Rae is definitely not that. I believe in strong, self-motivated characters who are the heroes of their own tales all around. This story could easily be written from Zan’s point of view, and be just as strong as he deals with the conflict of supporting his family versus doing what is right.

But I digress. I tend to do that. Talking about Rae and Zan is a thrill for me, as this particular story has been percolating in my brain for almost a decade.

When I finally settled down to write, this is the story I started, but I realized I wasn’t ready to do it justice. I needed to work within a tighter set of rules so I could hone my craft. So, I shelved it and followed my love of Honor Harrington into writing a series of military space opera books about an inexperienced commander who stumbles into (okay, causes) an alien holy war.

That series, too, could have been written with his XO, Kate, as the main character. Plus, it’s got some fantastic villains who follow the hero-of-their-own-story rule. The first book is Trespassers, and you can check it out here. If you’d like to try out the prequel for free, you can click the banner to join my Readers’ Group. I love chatting with folks about sci-fi, fantasy, and the world in general, and the Readers’ Group is the place to start!

In addition to the five-book series that starts with Trespassers, I’m hard at work on the first full-length novel about Rae, which starts a day or two after this short story ends. I’m hoping to release the first trilogy centered on her in the second quarter of 2019. If you’re reading this after that date, I promise it’ll be worth your time!

Rae’s tale will be epic, spanning several trilogies, and not limited to just being a space pirate. I hope that you’ve enjoyed the short story and will come along for the ride!
