"Well, you three are all right," the medical examiner said, raising her voice to be heard over the off-key caroling issuing from the platinum bangle. She pointed to Dena's belly. "You're fine. Baby's fine. Dr. K't'ank is fine, although I don't know when he's going to stop singing." She pointed to Ramos, now lying on a spare examination table next to the body of the psychotherapist. "You're going to need a rest."

Dena's heart stopped pounding. Her baby was all right. She had been panicking about that in the aircar all the way from the crime scene. On the other hand, K't'ank was still pretty well chemically impaired.

". . . Some takes delight in the hurley or the bollin', but I takes delight in the juice of the barley. . . ."

"So, you were right," Ramos croaked, his eyes half swollen shut. "She did it. But, how?"

Dena pointed to the metal flask on the table next to the late doctor's skinnypad. She opened it under Ramos's nose.

"Caribbean Hurricane," she said. "Plus a few extra ingredients. K't'ank. K't'ank!"

The song trailed off.

"What is it, Malone? I was enjoying myself."

She breathed in the perfume. "What's this smell like to you?"

"Like that dead human," K't'ank said. "Whee! It is a wonderful combination! Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling . . . !"

"I don't smell anything special," Ramos said. "Just the aftershave. Pretty subtle."

"The analysis will prove what K't'ank detected," Dena said, capping the bottle tightly. "Since our real murderer is dead, I hope I'll never have to sniff this stuff again. It's noxious. If Neal brought some of this home I'd dump it, and maybe him, too."

Ramos pulled himself up and jumped off the table. "So why did Dr. Sunnet kill a man using aftershave and hypnosis? Why didn't she go to the police or talk to a reporter and blow his reputation? The guy was a waste of skin. It sounds like he had it coming."

Dena smirked, knowing for once she had the better punchline.

"It was obvious once I met her," Dena said. "She didn't want to raise a stink."
