FINN AND THE puppies were at her house when she arrived, waiting on the front porch. Kaylee looked at them for a long moment, tapping one long, pink fingernail on her steering wheel.

She sighed. Uninvited guests were no fun, but her mother had raised her well, and she couldn’t be inhospitable. In Palmetto County, it was better to stab a man in the back than to be rude to him. You offered your worst enemy a glass of sweet tea and brought out the best china for dinner, even if you planned to ruin his reputation or bash in his head over dessert. That was just how things were done.

Besides, if the elf-guy insisted on staying around, Kaylee’s daddy would deal with him when he got back from his business trip. Her mother was in Florida, visiting relatives, so Kaylee was the woman of the house. She was a hostess born and bred, and she could cope just fine with unexpected visitors.

"You’d better come in." Kaylee climbed the steps up to the wraparound porch.

"Mistress, the Hunt—" Finn began.

"Do my puppies want some din-din?" Kaylee opened the door to let the hounds inside.
