Lamentations II - Moving Doggedly Onwards

The new morning came as a blaze of crowning glory, awakening Flack with a start as the fresh morning sun pierced his eyes and warmed his brain. Struggling quickly to his feet, he tried to ignore the stiffness in his legs as he concentrated on remaining as silent as possible. There was quiet all around him. There were no singing birds, no buzz of insects, no faraway noises of any sort. Even the breeze was missing as if it had been taken away by the evil humans themselves.

His mind mistily recalled the agonizing events of the previous day and, almost immediately, his burning flanks began to pain him once again. He could not stop the wince that caused an involuntary jerk of his right foreleg.

Suddenly, the thicket seemed to be a prison to him and he wanted to be free of it now, and so his eyes began to look around for the easiest way out from the tangle of branches that had now served their purpose of sheltering him for the night. He became aware of eyes staring at him and he began turning his head to where he felt the gaze was coming from. His eyes fell upon a small creature. At least it was a creature that was smaller than himself but was at least three or four times larger than either Chart or Brand. The animal remained silent, simply looking back at him, its body unmoving. Then the creature tilted its head to one side as it peered enquiringly at him. Flack returned the gaze, waiting for the animal to speak, but before either of them did have a chance to say something another creature’s voice spoke out. It was the all too familiar voice of one of the humans. Flack froze in horror.

The strange animal that stood there turned its face away from Flack, but only for a moment while it looked toward the voice’s owner, and then the gaze was returned and fixed back upon Flack once again.

“Come here, you stupid dog,” called the voice once again, louder, nearer, and much harsher.

Feeling his whole body become statuesque, Flack realised just how scared he was of making the slightest sound. He dare not move for fear of attracting the undivided attention of the human and so he tried to not even breathe, aware of the harsh pounding of his heart as its beat increased, seeming to resonate within his head. Dizziness was taking hold of him and he realised that it was good that the thicket was so heavy with foliage for surely he would have been seen by the human by now. ‘My colour does not help me blend in to these surroundings,’ he thought.

Flack’s fast beating heart suddenly beat faster as the human came into view. The human was approaching the dog and, seemingly, looking directly at Flack as he tried to see what it was that the dog was so interested in but, obviously and thankfully, due
