Chapter 18

Climbing down the rope, they waited in a side tunnel. Dim greenish fungal light cast their faces into a scene from a monster movie. Mildly acidic water dripped from the roof, and the metallic tang was more pronounced in the still, moisture laden, warm air. In the quiet, the occasional rumble or groan came from deep within the walls. Eroded by water, weakened and destabilised by long years of excavations, the rocks “talked” before they collapsed. Brief interludes of silence were followed by a soft rumble, and the ground vibrated around them. Sneedo and Chagar nodded to each other. Long experience told them the falls were some distance away. But the twins glanced uneasily at the roof before moving closer to Jock, flanking him protectively.

Sneedo, Jasmine, Daisy, and Jock padded quietly back out and around. They would attack from the rear, while Johanna and Chagar would deal with the others.

Soon, soft splashing footsteps heralded the approach of the enemy.
