CHAPTER NINETEEN

Carissa helped with the breakfast dishes at Cope House. The bed had been comfortable for her, especially after the wonderful bath last night, and the boys enjoyed the novelty of the pullout sofa bed. Seeing Charlie settled at Jonas’s house last night had helped the boys, especially Jayden. It was hard to tell what went through his head, how he interpreted the world. The last thing she wanted him to think was that they were giving Charlie away.

And she’d seen a different side of Jonas in his house last night. They’d almost kissed; he’d told her about his wife and daughter. And then… It was like he withdrew into himself. Something had shifted between them.

Maybe she’d just misread all of it. But she wouldn’t have too much time to dwell on it. Today she was going to help Claire with the finishing touches on their place and hope the sheriff’s department released her house soon.

Alex was finishing up work on the landscaping. She hadn’t put much thought into that for her house. It would be done with whatever she had leftover in her budget, if anything. The bushes and trees definitely needed to be trimmed up, and there were some plants that needed some TLC. But it wouldn’t hurt to get some ideas from Alex, see what she could translate into her much-smaller budget.

She headed outside toward the back. Alex, Samuel, and Vince were working back there laying paving stones and mulch. Working on the weekend to get everything in place for the grand opening in less than a month. And Claire had told her they were hosting a graduation party for Zach, Isaiah, and Samuel before that as a way to show off the place to the townsfolk. She didn’t know how Claire wasn’t a bundle of nerves. Then again, this wasn’t her first B-and-B.

Vince spotted her first. “Hey, Carissa. Good to see you.”

“Hey, Vince. I came back to see what ideas I might be able to steal before I started helping Claire.”

“Well, I can show you the landscaping plans, and then I could draw something up for your place.”

“Oh, I don’t want to interrupt.” She looked at Alex—who lifted a hand in greeting—but Samuel kept shoveling mulch from the wheelbarrow, acting as if she wasn’t there.

Alex waved them off. “Go ahead. Vince has some good ideas.”

Vince laid his shovel down and nodded toward his truck. “Let me show you.”

She followed him slowly, trying not to limp with her sore toe.

He noticed. “Hey, what happened? Are those stitches?”

“Yeah. I was attacked by a box cutter that jumped off the ladder. Dr. Tia did a great job, however.”

“Yikes. Glad you’re okay.” He opened a compartment in the back of his work truck and pulled out a set of rolled-up plans. He spread them across the lowered tailgate.

“Alex and Claire wanted a traditional-slash-luxurious feel to their property. So we used local versions of what you might find in an English country manor. We focused on symmetry and elegance with some hidden surprises, like the labyrinth.
