As luck would have it, Frank found his master in Asgard Park approximately sixty seconds after Cyril and his thugs met their end. After an initial panicked outburst, the bot advised John to be silent until they were back in East Sector. At first, the latter struggled to contain his emotions. As they waited for the u-bus, John attracted curious stares from other travellers with his hand-wringing angst. His demeanour changed, however, when he realised that if he'd evaded capture for only a minute more, Frank would've located and rescued him, possibly without loss of life. Wracked with guilt, John spent the bus journey downcast.

When they arrived in East Sector, Frank made sure they were clear of the other disembarking passengers and then said, ‘It's not your fault, John. Don't hold yourself accountable.’

‘Nobody else shot them, though, did they?’ John’s tone was bitter. He began to walk faster.

‘It was self-defence. They would've killed you before I got there.’

‘You don't know that. Cyril said to take me alive. They might've abducted me, like they did with the others. And you could've tracked us.’

‘Your wrist-com signal was intermittent, John. I kept losing your location. By the time I found you —’

‘I know, I know. I could've been dead. But I might not.’

Frank put a synthetic hand on his friend’s shoulder. ‘Don't torture yourself, John. You did what you had to do. Cyril was a bad person —’

‘Yeah, Cyril was a bad person,’ John allowed, stopping to turn and address the cyborg face-to-face. ‘But that girl… she was, what, seventeen? About the same age as Curls. And that's the really fucked up thing. I've been out there today trying to get justice for Curls. But just by me being out there, a target, another kid has been killed! It's just… unfair.’

‘It's not fair, John. But it's not unfair either. It's just life. There is no such thing as fair, or unfair. Things happen, or they don't. There's no cosmic justice, karma or fate. We just deal with what comes or doesn't come. Now let's get back to the others.’

‘Fucking hell. Everybody's a philosopher these days, even the machines.’ John hurried after the bot.
