Dani sat in her office with Jordy the next day. This was her first opportunity to speak with him since he’d searched Jade’s room for clues to her whereabouts. She was sore and stiff, with a number of bruises on her body leaving her feeling like the walking wounded, but she was determined to take the next steps in the case. It didn’t matter how tired she was or how badly she needed a long rest, where she could relax and forget about the pressures that were currently heaped upon her. Jade Franklin, Freddy Lomax, Simon Walker—those three names caused her sleepless nights and unrelenting worry. There would be no rest for her until these cases were resolved.

“You all right, Chief?” Jordy sat at the opposite side of the desk. “Are you sure you should be working? Nobody would blame you for taking a couple weeks’ leave, you know.”

She clicked her tongue at the suggestion. “I can’t sit at home when there’s a missing child to find and a possible killer at large in our community.”

“The team is more than capable of handling the Jade Franklin and Freddy Lomax cases in your absence, and you don’t have to sit at home while you’re on leave. You could take a vacation. You look like you could do with one.”

She couldn’t deny that he was right. A vacation somewhere warm sounded wonderful. And her mom would no doubt come along too. Mia could swim and make sand castles, collect shells and run from the tide. They’d be able to sit and watch the sun dip below the horizon every night. Perhaps Lomax would even be located and arrested while she was far away from his clutches, and she could return to a normal life.

“No.” She pushed the tantalizing images aside. “I may be aching from head to toe right now, but I need to be here. There’s too much to do.” She leaned on her desk with her forearms. “What did you turn up in Jade’s bedroom? Did you take a good look at her computer?”

“Her web searches are what you’d expect to see from a twelve-year-old girl. She spends quite a lot of time on social media and YouTube, but there’s nothing concerning there. It’s all pretty normal stuff.”

“Any private messages or online chatting?”

“No. It looks like my Safer Schools Program might’ve actually had a positive effect on the kids I talk to. Jade seems to be really careful about her online activity.”

“Well, that’s good news,” Dani said. “But it doesn’t help us generate any leads.”

“Although I didn’t find anything on Jade’s computer, I did find her journal.” Jordy slid a pink notebook onto the polished desk, on which the words “Super-Secret” were written in marker pen. “It was taped to the back of a drawer in her dresser. Sonia and Nick looked surprised when I found it so I guess they didn’t know it was there. It was the only item I logged and removed. There was nothing else of interest.
