Dani sat in her office with Jordy the next day. This was her first opportunity to speak with him since heâd searched Jadeâs room for clues to her whereabouts. She was sore and stiff, with a number of bruises on her body leaving her feeling like the walking wounded, but she was determined to take the next steps in the case. It didnât matter how tired she was or how badly she needed a long rest, where she could relax and forget about the pressures that were currently heaped upon her. Jade Franklin, Freddy Lomax, Simon Walkerâthose three names caused her sleepless nights and unrelenting worry. There would be no rest for her until these cases were resolved.
âYou all right, Chief?â Jordy sat at the opposite side of the desk. âAre you sure you should be working? Nobody would blame you for taking a couple weeksâ leave, you know.â
She clicked her tongue at the suggestion. âI canât sit at home when thereâs a missing child to find and a possible killer at large in our community.â
âThe team is more than capable of handling the Jade Franklin and Freddy Lomax cases in your absence, and you donât have to sit at home while youâre on leave. You could take a vacation. You look like you could do with one.â
She couldnât deny that he was right. A vacation somewhere warm sounded wonderful. And her mom would no doubt come along too. Mia could swim and make sand castles, collect shells and run from the tide. Theyâd be able to sit and watch the sun dip below the horizon every night. Perhaps Lomax would even be located and arrested while she was far away from his clutches, and she could return to a normal life.
âNo.â She pushed the tantalizing images aside. âI may be aching from head to toe right now, but I need to be here. Thereâs too much to do.â She leaned on her desk with her forearms. âWhat did you turn up in Jadeâs bedroom? Did you take a good look at her computer?â
âHer web searches are what youâd expect to see from a twelve-year-old girl. She spends quite a lot of time on social media and YouTube, but thereâs nothing concerning there. Itâs all pretty normal stuff.â
âAny private messages or online chatting?â
âNo. It looks like my Safer Schools Program mightâve actually had a positive effect on the kids I talk to. Jade seems to be really careful about her online activity.â
âWell, thatâs good news,â Dani said. âBut it doesnât help us generate any leads.â
âAlthough I didnât find anything on Jadeâs computer, I did find her journal.â Jordy slid a pink notebook onto the polished desk, on which the words âSuper-Secretâ were written in marker pen. âIt was taped to the back of a drawer in her dresser. Sonia and Nick looked surprised when I found it so I guess they didnât know it was there. It was the only item I logged and removed. There was nothing else of interest.
