Chapter Eight

Brendan was waiting for her when the cab pulled up to their rendezvous point. He came forward to open the rear passenger door and held out his hand. Carrie warmed to her toes as he helped her out of the back seat.

‘Fancy,’ she said as she took in his suit and tie. ‘I take it we’re not talking wings and beer on tap.’

‘You upped the ante on me with your little shopping trip, so I’ll just show off by pulling some strings and getting reservations at Asta’s.’ He drew her arm through his. ‘You’re not one of those women who only eats salad, are you? Because I hate like hell to spend a fortune on lettuce when you could have lobster.’

‘I never do lobster, but I hear their pan-roasted salmon is so good it could kill you.’

‘And the chocolate and peanut-butter mousse could bring you back to life.’

The breeze skimmed and coiled around her legs. Arm in arm, they made their way to the city block that was home to the best restaurants in town. The closest Carrie had ever come to dining in any of these establishments was visiting the sweetshop just around the corner and getting a whiff of grilled meat as she munched on a waffle cone. Now here she was, on the arm of a sexy-as-sin man whose offer of chocolate and peanut-butter mousse paled in comparison to what would come after dinner.

A fancy restaurant. A cuddly stroll. It was lovely, indeed, but she wasn’t comfortable with the sense that she was being courted. She had been expecting illicit. She wanted illicit.

This was … a little romantic.

She felt an odd little twinge in her gut. She tugged him back as they reached the courtyard. ‘Is this a date?’

‘I suppose you could call it that.’ He pulled her closer and his laughter rumbled around her. ‘Feel like running away on me now?’

‘I just want to make sure we’re on the same page.’

‘This is what it is.’

‘And what is that?’

‘Me, well dressed, wining and dining you before I take you home and do nasty things to you?’ He slipped his hands under her coat and cupped her ass. ‘Relax, Bombshell. It’s just dinner, and a little extra.’

She wriggled slightly, pleased by the hard poke of his dick against her belly, and tugged on his tie. ‘Just a little extra?’

‘Maybe more than just a little.’ He released her and led the way to Asta’s.

Upon first walking through, Carrie was disheartened to find that the restaurant didn’t have that classy intimate charm one came to expect from fine dining. There were very few couples. The clientele seemed to consist mostly of middle-aged groups of friends paired off in husband-and-wife teams, with a few low-key combinations of well-dressed men and women obviously out for a business dinner.

But as she and Brendan followed the waitress down a set of stairs, she discovered that Asta’s had its own cellar space that was reserved for those looking for a little quiet time. The tables were round and small and the area was dimly lit with candles flickering everywhere.
