Thursday Afternoon
âSheâs quite the special young lady,â said the voice.
I fumbled with my phone, looking for some app to record the call. Why didnât I have an app that could trace calls and send in a special police SWAT team?
The voice continued, âIâm Dr. Nathan Mahowald. Iâm a professor in the biology department at Santa Clara University.â
Although still flummoxed, my heart rate slowed. I didnât think normal kidnappers gave their full names or worked as a professor at a prestigious university. âWhy do you have her? Whatâs she doing?â
âSkye showed up a little while ago for an appointment sheâd requested. I was startled when I saw how young she was. I told her that she needed to go to school,â said Dr. Mahowald.
Now confused, I stopped pacing along the sidewalk. âWhy did she meet with you?â
âWeâve been corresponding for a while. She had questions about a project sheâs doing on Dorymyrmex insanus.â
âWhat?â I couldnât help myself.
âTheyâre commonly called crazy ants.â
âYouâre kidding?â With everything else going on, I couldnât believe he was talking about ants.
The professor continued, âBased on her questions and the depth of her research, I assumed she was in a community college or at least high school.â
âThatâs Skye for you. But itâs only a seventh-grade science fair project.â The DroneTech security guards might have seen the steam coming out of my ears. Skye hijacked Rover, put my career in jeopardy and interrupted the search for Laneyâs attacker all for some crazy ants. It wasnât the professorâs fault, but I was going insane.
âYou have a budding scientist on your hands.â Dr. Mahowald sounded impressed.
If I donât kill her first. âCould you put her on the phone?â
Skye spoke with an unsteady voice. âUncle Marty? Iâm sorry I skipped school. Dr. Mahowald is like an expert on endangered ants. I couldnât get the Rover car to respond. Mom was going to take me and I didnât know what to do.â Skye started crying.
Iâd never known how to handle people when they cry. I took a deep breath and told her to stop. âOk. Donât cry. Weâll talk more later. Iâll take a taxi to come get you.â
âThanks.â She sniffed and, with her voice steadying, asked, âCould you not tell Mom about skipping?â
âWeâll talk later,â I said, careful not to promise anything. At this point, Iâd ground her myself. I gulped as I remembered the Amber Alert.
âSkye, Iâve got to go. Iâll be there soon.â I hung up.
I called Sergeant Jackson again.
No greeting again. âNow what? Pretty busy here.â
Although I could feel Jacksonâs lack of love, I needed to give him the update. âYes, sorry, itâs Marty again. I just heard from Skye. Sheâs okay after all.â
âWhat?â Jacksonâs voice raised from his normal low rumble. âI thought she was missing and you didnât know what happened to her?â He didnât sound pleased.
I babbled, âItâs ⦠um ⦠because of her ants. I mean, her science fair.â
âWhat?â Jacksonâs voice grew more curt and annoyed. âI just put out an Amber Alert.â
My nervousness increased. âStupid science fair.
