It was dark when Varney rolled open the door and towed Fender 454 clear of the hangar. The rain had stopped, and the meteorologists predicted only a few passing showers until the following morning.

Fortis and the team belted into their seats with the doors pinned open and door guns deployed. Varney scrambled into his seat, and the engines whined as the hovercopter lifted off. After Red and Johnson completed post-takeoff checks, they began a wide, looping approach to Point Alpha. They simulated insertions in two other locations, hovering low to mimic troop debarkation before flying on to the next point.

“One minute to Point Alpha,” Red said over the intercom.

Fortis removed his headset and put his helmet on. “One minute.”

The hovercopter slowed until they were in a hover, and a tiny red light over the door turned green. Fortis jumped the meter to the ground and angled off a few meters to his right. The rest of the team followed and established a perimeter as Fender 454 roared back into the night sky.

For several minutes, the team watched and waited for a reaction to their arrival, but the night remained quiet.

“Count off,” the captain said in a soft voice, even though he could have shouted inside his helmet, and his voice wouldn’t carry outside.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

“Four. Okay, Woody, take us to the first waypoint, nice and quiet.”

Without another word, the team rose and began their patrol.
