Before we left the police department, I’d asked my mother to look for Nick. She had no idea where to look other than his home, but said she’d give it a shot anyway. While at Starbucks, Mel and I discussed everything we knew about Nick and Carrie, which wasn't much, and resorted to calling her kids for more information. The kids didn't understand what we were doing or why, so Mel made up an excuse.

“They what?” she asked her daughter. She didn’t put her on speaker because the traffic outside made it hard to hear. “Wow, I had no idea. Glad they could afford that.” She was silent for another minute and then added, “Do you know the address?” Mel whispered, “I need paper and a pen.”

She jotted down an address on the back of her receipt. “Okay, got it. Thanks, sweetie.” Long pause. “Yes, I know. I don’t know what’s going on, but Aaron’s assisting in an unofficial capacity, so we’ll know something soon.” Another long pause. “Yes, you can come home and stay as long as you need to, but I don’t think your father would want you messing up your college plans because of him.” Another pause. “I’m fine, I promise. Yes, I’d prefer you stay. I’ll keep you posted. Love you, mean it.”

She handed me the receipt. "They have a second home in a community called Big Tree in North Georgia. How could they afford a second home?”

"That and why would they have a second home in Georgia instead of some place like Florida?” Who would want to vacation in Georgia if they could afford the ocean?

"Guess they wanted something close?”

I quietly summoned my mother. She appeared before us and glanced at the paper. “Huh. How’d I miss that?”

“Getting lazy?”

She ignored my jab. “You going too?”

I shook my head. “I think we’re going to leave that to the police.”

“Who’s here?” Mel asked.

“My mother. She’s going, but like I told her, we need to let Price know.” I wasn’t about to take a long trip south if I didn’t absolutely need to.

Mel rolled her eyes in disdain. “If he was a good cop, he’d already know.”

She was right. Price should have already looked into Nick’s finances. The fact that he hadn’t was concerning.

“I’m on it,” Ma said. She pointed to Mel. “Watch her. She’s got high blood pressure.” With that, she disappeared.

I stared at Mel. “Are you feeling okay?”

“What? Yes, I’m fine. I’m over being upset already.” She stood and grabbed her purse from the back of the chair. “Let’s go. We need to get to Carrie before she does whatever she’s going to do.”

“No,” I said. “Sit, and from now on, it’s decaf for you.” I took her latte and put it on my side of the table. “We can’t screw this up by reacting. If you want to know the truth, then we need to back off and let Price and Aaron handle it.”

She fell back into her chair. “I can’t believe you just said that.
