Demonstrate doing the same with the French compound sentence: Mercure est une planète très chaude parce qu’ elle est très près du soleil. Point out the pronoun elle, emphasising that it replaces the feminine noun Mercure.

Display separate, simple sentences, preferably on an interactive whiteboard. Let the children work with a partner as they decide which to pair into a compound sentence with parce que or et. Where will they use a pronoun? Share oral answers and, if using an interactive whiteboard, drag and drop sentences into these pairs, link with parce que or et and make pronoun substitutions: La terre est assez chaude. La terre est assez près du soleil. (parce que)

Le soleil est jaune. Le soleil est très, très chaud. (et)

Pluton est très froid. Pluton est très loin du soleil. (parce que)
