The team on offense (in possession of the ball) has four downs to score or move the ball a minimum of 10 yards toward the opponent’s end zone. When the offense gains at least 10 yards on any play, they are immediately awarded four more downs. If they fail, the defensive team gains possession from where the fourth down ended.

Football games are divided into 15-minute quarters. Ties are decided in 15-minute, sudden-death overtime periods (play continues until a winner is declared). It used to be that games were won in overtime by the first team to score. In 2012 the NFL updated its rules and now both teams must have the opportunity to possess the ball at least once in overtime. The only exception is when the team receiving the overtime kickoff scores a touchdown (as opposed to a field goal) on its first possession.

★ EQUIPMENT AND PLAYING SPACE:

Football fields are 360 feet long by 160 feet wide. Goal lines at either end are exactly 100 yards apart, with end zones extending an additional 10 yards behind the goal lines. Inside the end zones, at the far ends, two U-shaped goalposts stand 10 feet above the ground, with posts 18½ feet across. Yard lines cross the field every 5 yards and are labeled every 10 yards (starting from the 50-yard line at midfield and showing the distance to the closest goal line).
