THERE ARE IN NATURE NEITHER REWARDS

NOR PUNISHMENTS. THERE ARE ONLY

CONSEQUENCES.

“That is thought-provoking,” Kathy said, expecting a longer discussion on the topic. But Flick quickly reverted to his favorite subject.

Later, on the way back, the group spotted three lions moving gracefully through tall lion-colored grass. Flick thought they might be from the same litter because they were about the same age; there were two males and one female. During the remainder of the trip, Flick dispensed more of his knowledge of the wild.

“Bushbuck disperse when they are frightened and then find each other again by the black markings around their tails. Pregnant females can hold back birth by as much as two months; they like their young to be born during the rainy season so that the birth smell is washed away. They are prey to so many other animals that the young have to be able to run minutes after birth.” He called them the McDonald’s, or fast food, of the bush.

“The rhinoceros has no natural enemies. They control their own birth rate.

“The monkeys and baboons spend their days up in the hills but come down to the more open valley to spend the night to avoid the pythons and leopards in the hills.”

That night, each member of the group slept well.
