1st year of high school. 1978. I remember standing in a record store holding the Easier LP and hoping I . wouldn’t get caught staring. I liked Patti Smith’s music, but didn’t know: much about her. It was the kind of music you’d only hear on very rare occasions at high school parties. And you wouldn’t hear it for long because someone “weird” would’ve snuck it on the turntable and a group of other people would get up and take it off. Same thing that’d happen with Iggy or the Velvets – an undertow feeling you could sense come into the room, and battle lines drawn around the stereo.
