Jabbing my fingers through my hair as I paced up and down the length of the living room, I wondered where I had gone wrong? I thought Calliope and I had a connection but her actions this morning pointed far away from that conclusion. I could read her my resume and show her family photos trying to prove my mettle but it was moot. She wanted nothing to do with my offer. Maybe she was hiding something. Or she felt like she would owe me a favor and I would take advantage of her. Callie had brought up that topic last night, but I didn’t want to entertain her line of conversation. I would never use my power and wealth to exploit someone in need.

Shaking my head, I tried to think of something compelling enough for her to understand that my intentions were pure. The floor creaked and I glanced at the entrance to the hallway. Calliope was braced against the doorjamb. Her pointer finger was busy twirling a strand of her hair. She appeared to be thinking very hard about something. The creases in her forehead and the worry lines around her eyes cemented my observation. I had to convince her to stay here.

She inhaled sharply then took one step inside the room. “Do you really think so highly of me after knowing me for a few hours?”

I leaned against the mantle and crossed my arms over my chest. I wasn’t entirely sure how I could convince her of my sincerity but I had to try. “Yes, and I see your potential, Callie. You’ve been dealt a lot of shitty hands in this game of life, sweetheart. It’s okay to lean on someone else and trust a little bit.”

“And you think I’m beautiful?”

“I do.”

She moved to the couch with slow deliberate steps. Calliope sank into the cushions, twirling her hair all the while. “Thank you,” she said demurely. “I’ve been wondering about something since I found your store.”

“What’s that?”

“Is your shop made for Littles?”

I had to be careful with my reply. I didn’t want her to think I was running a place to entrap Littles. Some of my regulars argued it was a magical store because they found amazing partners there but it was a happy accident. It seemed like Calliope wanted to steer the conversation away from the relationship aspect. We could talk professionally but underneath the curiosity was something we needed to address. No more tiptoeing around the subject.

“My shop is open to the general public as long as you’re over the age of eighteen,” I repeated my statement from last night.

“But, you’ve sort of made it like an oasis for people who, um, seek out comfort objects. Plus the reading nook and the stuffed animals and the hot chocolate. I don’t think it’s a stretch.”

“I provide a welcoming environment to people from all walks of life. Kink friendly would also be a good description, but I’m not running a club. Some things have to be private.”

“Okay, but there’s more to it.
