The Sacrifice

In the late afternoon a courier arrived to deliver a package for Thomas. Thomas signed and thanked him. He walked towards Dalia who was sitting in her armchair reading a book in French. By then, she was already capable of reading medium-level books, in a language she once only knew existed. Thomas had bought her the soft velvet covered armchair for her to read in, after she passed the test that he had prepared for her (she discovered he was fluent, and could read and write proficiently in five different languages).

Lifting her up with care, he stroked her cheek and said, “Go take a shower, and then put this on.”

This was a soft package, wrapped in light brown paper. When Dalia opened it in the bathroom, she found a set of underpants and bra made of white lace, almost completely transparent, a cream silk shirt with pearl buttons and a matching silk skirt. Next to the supple heap there was a box containing a pair of cream stiletto pumps and yet another box with a light silk scarf whose purpose she did not quite understand. She left it by the sink.

She lingered under the shower, sluggishly rubbing her body with soap and shampoo. This night, it was obvious to her, was not going to be a regular night, but she had no idea what Thomas had planned, and she was incapable of guessing. The baselines of her new world were already clear to her, and nevertheless, every time she thought she knew what was coming, something happened that changed everything. She scrubbed her scalp vigorously with another handful of shampoo and rinsed it for the last time. Ultimately, she had to step out and dry herself. She examined her naked body at leisure in front of the mirror. Dalia reckoned that life with Thomas, which included regular exercise and healthy food, had made her look more desirable. Her figure was slender and taut, her breasts were full and soft and her waist narrower. Even her hair looked shinier.

She put on the lacey underwear. In a different reality, she would have felt attractive. Even now the sight of her body in revealing lingerie inevitably triggered arousal, but now this sensation was mixed with fear. The new clothes were exactly her size.

Thomas too, it turned out, liked the silk garments. He studied her admiringly when she came out. Reaching a gentle finger to the uppermost pearl button, he undid it, saying, “Wonderful. You look wonderful. You’ll be fine.” Why would she be fine? Dalia was about to find out.

Thomas turned her around and cuffed her hands behind her back. Then, he went into the shower and came back with the silk scarf, which he tied over her eyes. The room disappeared. All she could feel were the soft clothes, the rigid metal handcuffs, and Thomas’s hand hanging a metal chain with a heavy charm around her neck. Then he gripped her arm and led her outside.
