FRENCH 75
CLASSIC
COCKTAIL
While technically a spritz, the French 75 is a popular classic that is really known as its own thing. If you find it on a cocktail menu, youâll likely see that itâs made with gin as the base spirit, which is incredibly delicious (as long as you like gin). However, I prefer to make and order mine as it was originally intendedâmade with the French spirit of cognac.
Cognac is often thought of synonymously with fall and wintertime, and used in spirit-forward cocktails such as the Blonde by Nature. Although I do enjoy a boozy cognac beverage, this incredibly versatile spirit made from distilled wine is just as amazing in lighter, more refreshing cocktails. For this type of cocktail, Iâd recommend using a younger cognac (often labeled âVS,â which means they are aged for at least 2 years in French oak), which tend to have flavors and aromas of fresh stone fruit and subtle floral elements.
Fun drinking activity: Make two French 75s, one with gin and one with cognac, and see which one you prefer.
Combine the gin, fresh lemon juice and Simple Syrup in a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Double-strain into a champagne flute and top with champagne. Serve up. Garnish by balancing a lemon twist on the edge of the glass.
1 oz (30 ml) gin or cognac
½ oz (15 ml) fresh lemon juice
½ oz (15 ml) Simple Syrup
3 oz (90 ml) champagne
Garnish: lemon twist
