The moment the words are out of my mouth, I tense up and wait for Crew’s reaction. At first, he must think I’m joking because he smiles. But when I don’t return his grin, his blue eyes narrow slightly, like he’s trying to understand if I’m just teasing him.

“A princess?” he repeats, searching my face for any sign that I’m pulling his leg.

I nod, my face completely serious. “My family, the Saxons, have ruled over Ambrosia for hundreds of years. My father is King, my mother is Queen, and I am the Royal Princess.” Once the confession is out of my mouth, I study him closely, preparing myself for his reaction. Because I have no idea what it will be.

“Are you fucking with me?” he asks, tilting his dark head.

“I wish.”

“Gimme a sec,” he says and pulls out his phone. “I’m googling you.”

Swallowing down my nerves, I watch him punch my information into a search engine. A moment later, his head slowly lifts. “Should I start calling you ‘Your Highness’?” he asks, voice as serious as a heart attack.

I burst out laughing. “No. Actually, I kind of prefer Blondie.”

Crew’s mouth edges up. “I’ve never been fake engaged to a princess before. Or anyone for that matter.”

“And I’ve never dated or been fake engaged to a billionaire before.”

He brushes my words away with a dismissive wave of his hand. “Royalty is way more impressive than a mere billionaire.” I know he’s only playing with me because his eyes sparkle.

“Does this, ah, make a difference?” I ask.

He considers my words for a moment. “I like spending time with you, Noelle, whether you’re a princess or a mere mortal like the rest of us. I do find it intriguing, though. And I suddenly find myself a helluva lot more nervous to meet your family. Am I going to be expected to bow or get down on one knee when you introduce us?”

“No, of course not,” I exclaim. With a sigh, I pick at the edge of a pillow. “Remember when I told you about Alec and how my parents are going to make me get engaged to him if I don’t find anyone here?”

“Yeah. How could I forget?”

“Well, that’s why. Because they want me to fully step into my royal duties and they want me to have a suitable partner at my side.”

He makes a scoffing sound. “I’m hardly suitable, but I’ll help you get out of being engaged to a man you don’t love. That’s not a fair thing to ask and I don’t care if you’re a princess or not. No one should be forced to marry someone they don’t love.”

I nod and when he gets quiet, I can’t help but start having doubts. “Are you okay with this?”

“Why did you hide it from me?” he asks, eyeing me intently.

“It wasn’t anything personal. I just always wanted a normal life, you know? So, I don’t go around announcing it to everyone. The only person who knows here in the States is Katie.
