Chapter 41

Food Crisis

Rick invited Grady and his wife over for a meeting and a glass of wine.

“Today was a good day, right?” said Grady.

“Sure, it was. Everyone got to eat something. I wish it were more, and the problem is we’re going to run out of food at some point.”

“There are a lot of game in the park,” said Judy.

“I know, but we’re not the only ones harvesting right now, and even if there were a never-ending supply, we can’t live on meat and fish alone. Our bodies aren’t meant for it. I used to watch this TV show,” Rick continued, “where the guy would go from city to city and survive only on what he could find to eat.”

“Like dumpster diving?” asked Judy.

“No, not at all. More like finding food growing naturally. A lot of it was plants, and this was in the city, not up here, where they grow everywhere.”

“We just need someone who knows what’s edible and what will kill a man,” Grady chimed in.

“Will it be enough long term?” asked Judy.

“No, we need additional help. It won’t fix the problem; it just buys us a little time. I’ve got an idea,” Rick continued. “Hear me out, but I want the kids here also.”

“They’re adults, dear. Maybe only college students, but adults still.”

“I know, of course I do. Let’s find them so we can be on the same page.”

I sat the following morning with Scott, Shanan, Jo, Jenny, the Holmans, and Grady and his wife in the Holman living room.

“We’re about to have a serious food problem in our town,” stated Rick. “We have enough game and fish for a while, but we need vegetables and carbs to round out nutrition until the power comes back, and we start to rebuild as a nation. I’ve been talking a bit with our radio operator friend, and the word or theory I should correct myself on is that foreign countries want our resources, farmland and timber. Now, when they get here, they’ll start in the Midwest, I’m guessing, as opposed to, say, Arizona, Nevada, and even Colorado, not that we couldn’t become a tourist attraction again for a million Chinese ex-pats, but that’s way down the road if it ever happens. For now, the one thing we have going for us is also our greatest weakness; we’re isolated, protected, and cut off from the rest of the country. It’s why people stopped heading up here after the first few weeks; it’s just too far. Our friend has also heard a lot of chatter about military bases across the country, that they may be vulnerable to attack, especially those in open areas like coastal towns, say San Diego or the middle of Texas, surrounded by flat land. My proposal is to figure out how to get in touch with the right people. I’m talking military or higher government and pitching a plan to set up a base surrounded by mountains, easy-to-cut-off trucking routes, and air space. In exchange, of course, for helping with our food problems.
