CHAPTER

TWENTY-EIGHT

A gentle breeze stirred me to awareness. It ruffled my hair and warmed my skin. Grunting, I propped up on my elbows and looked around to get my bearings. I might have dozed off, but I wasn’t sure. Bit by bit, my mind cleared, and everything came back to me. Soft grass was under my body, and Azelia’s silky form snuggled up to my side. I immediately smiled. Perhaps I should’ve been concerned I’d nodded off in the first place, but troubled thoughts were the last thing on my mind.

Seeing I was lucid, Azelia nuzzled my cheek softly, then rose and slipped into her gown. I didn’t see the point of the see-through garb, but I watched with an appreciative eye all the same—the sheer fabric draped over her slender frame just right.

I didn’t follow suit, not right away. Instead, inhaling a deep breath of sweet air, I propped my head up on my arms and indulged in the moment. I took in Azelia, the swaying leaves above, and the billowing clouds drifting lazily in the sky. The life of a Legionnaire was a rough one, and moments like these were nonexistent. I wanted to savor every peaceful second.

At last, albeit reluctant, I decided it was time to go. I had no idea what state Fallon was in, and there was a dropship awaiting our return. The pilots were probably shitting themselves with impatience by now—possibly contemplating abandoning us altogether—and I still had important matters to attend to here.

“So where to next?” I asked, getting up and slipping into my thin smart-suit.

“You mentioned a tower? A comm station where the ancients and sleeks gather whenever they’re here. How about there?” I suggested.

Azelia and I had had a great time. We’d done some talking, some other stuff, and had even made a deal, but I didn’t want to return to Maldovi empty-handed.

Azelia smiled at me in that gentle, innocent way of hers. “Sure. It is just past our village. I will be honored to escort. Your promise means so much to me. A hope for us all.”

As she spoke, she grazed her silky tail over my cheek and neck, making me tingle. I found it hard to break away.

I snapped my fingers. “But I need to get my gear first, then the tower.”

If there was anything useful on this planet, it would be there, and I needed my armor to download the info.

Guiding me with her tail wrapped around my hand, Azelia led me to the hut. I took stock of my bearings as we went, wondering about the intoxicant I’d inhaled. I felt okay and remembered everything clearly. Shrugging off my concern, I figured I was good to go.

Inside the hut, the scene hadn’t changed much. Fallon was still snoring away, splayed out in the leaves, half naked, and spit stringing from her sagging jaw. She’d ripped her smart-suit open again, and this time, it hadn’t fully resealed.

I shuddered at the hellish sight, deciding not to disturb the beast.

Scanning the space, I noted Kanu had made some progress.
