Chapter 8 - Zoey

Zoey hunkered down beside an overflowing dumpster, her back pressed to the wall. A rat scurried past her scuffed boots, and she had to swallow an involuntary scream. The stench of rot and decay hung heavy in the air, a miasma that emanated from the rubbish inside the bin.

Ignoring the smell, she reached inside her backpack for her last bottle of water and downed the lukewarm liquid in one go. After stashing the empty bottle back inside her pack, she risked a quick look around. After days spent looking for other survivors from the hospital, she was just about ready to give up. To make matters worse, the streets were crawling with the undead.

Desperate for some indication of her people’s whereabouts, she’d gone to the hospital site itself. It was a hive of activity, but the wrong kind. Blackwell and his men were busy clearing out the zombies, luring them away with trucks and music while others repaired the defenses. They burned any corpses they found, and the skies billowed with acrid black smoke.

Zoey swallowed hard on the knot in her throat, her heart pounding in her chest. After spying on Blackwell’s men for several hours, one of them had spotted her, and the chase was on.

She’d managed to shake them off, but not without a few close calls. Now, she was stuck in this grimy alleyway with nothing but her wits and a few supplies to keep her alive.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of shuffling footsteps, and she tensed, her fingers tightening around the knife she held in her hand. She dared a quick look around the corner of the dumpster and cursed.

A lone zombie had stumbled into the alleyway, and each step was bringing it closer to her hiding spot. There was no ignoring it. The moment it spotted her, it would attack. “Damn it! Not now!”

There was no help for it. She had to face the zombie head-on and kill it before it found her.

Zoey waited for the infected to draw closer, her knife held ready to strike. As soon as it moved within range, she sprang into action. With one swift movement, she plunged the knife into its temple, sending its corpse tumbling lifelessly to the ground.

Wiping the blood from her blade, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction. Killing zombies had become a routine part of her life, but it never got any easier. Each kill was a victory, and each victory meant she got to live a little longer.

Sheathing her knife, Zoey crept to the far end of the alleyway. She couldn’t hide there forever, exposed and in the open. Her best option was to make her way back the way she’d come, as far away from Blackwell and the hospital as possible. Then, she could resume her search for her people.

As much as she wanted revenge on Blackwell, she couldn’t do it on her own. There were too many of them and only one of her.
