Chapter Six

Wendy had just started her shift on Monday when the studio line rang. Hitting the button, she expected to hear the studio switchboard operator, or maybe her boss. But the voice in her ear took her by surprise.

“Hi, Wendy.”

It was Michael. Her heart did a little dance, and then her mouth went dry.

“Michael. Well, what a surprise. I’m just at the end of a commercial break. Can you hang on?”

“Sure.”

She punched the button, scrambling to switch up the tracks she was going to play, selecting something long, something that would give her time to on the phone.

“Okay, listeners, a special treat. An extended set of Led Zeppelin, for all you Robert Plant fans. Enjoy.” She clicked off the microphone, took a deep breath and hit the flashing light on the phone.

“I’m back.”

“I hear. And by your song choice it appears as though I have at least fifteen minutes to win you over, get you to agree to a second date.”

She could hear the smile in his voice and imagined his face, his dark eyes, sensuous mouth curving up at the corners. And he was asking her for a second date.

“What did you have in mind?”

“If I can be so bold, dinner at my place and a continuation of what we didn’t finish on Saturday.”

Wendy blew out a breath. “Well, you don’t waste any time, do you? Right to the point.”

“You’re the girl who skips appetizers. I’m just following your lead.” His laugh reached her, low and deep, and she felt a quiver of excitement low in her belly.

“Touché. Okay. Second date. Dinner and…we’re obviously talking about sex?”

“Normally, I wouldn’t be this bold…or normally, my dates usually don’t turn me down when invited.”

Wendy drew a sharp breath, brows furrowing. And said nothing.

“Shit. I did that thing again, didn’t I? Where I say the wrong thing. Sorry, Wendy. Maybe I have had bad taste in women, up till now. But yeah, usually the women I date are pretty willing to spend the night.”

“And I’m not like them, so I’m now something you pursue? And that’s making me what, a prize?” Wendy heard the rising tone of her voice, verging on anger, and she marveled at how she could go from giddy to irritated with him, in such a short span of time.

“No, not at all. Really. I’m doing a bad job of this. Fucking it up royally. Again.”

Wendy had no choice but to laugh. “Yeah, you are. But I’ll cut you some slack. Second date agreed to, and we’ll play it by ear.”

“Really? I mean, that’s great. Tonight? I’ll pick you up from work and we can have a late dinner.” The relief in his voice was palpable.

“I drove to work…I can drive to your house.” Wendy glanced at the clock and the board in front of her. “I gotta go. Give me your address.”

She scribbled down what he told her and she blinked at the street name and they hung up. Pretty expensive neighborhood. But then again, what did she expect?

She pulled the mic toward her and waited for the last strains of Kashmir to fade out.
