Chapter 19

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Bishop drove back to Cara Thompson’s apartment to compare notes after visiting Clayton Turner.

“Rick?” Cara said in surprise when she opened the door. “I was about to leave for town to work on my displays.”

Then Cara stood on her tiptoes and gently touched Bishop above his left eye. “Oh, you opened the cut over your eye again. What have you been doing?”

“Just talking to the fellas.”

“Oh, I’m sure. Come in and let me fix it again.”

Bishop followed her inside the apartment. Cara told him to sit at the dining room table, and she retrieved the first aid kit from the bathroom. After removing the old butterfly bandages, she cleaned the wound with disinfectant.

“Ouch,” Bishop groused.

“Sorry. Did I hurt you?”

“Only a little.”

“Well, I have to clean it, or the cut might get infected.”

“Someday you’ll make some lucky boxer a good corner man.”

Cara giggled. “Be still.”

“I’m trying.”

“Did you find Noa?”

“Yeah, and he told me who hired him and his pal to run me out of town.”

“Did he? I’m surprised he told you anything. How did you get him to talk?”

“Oh, a little of this and a little of that. First, I introduced his face to the business end of a shovel. Then I robbed him, and bribed him with his own money to tell me after promising not to break both his legs.”

“Oh, my gosh. You did all that?”

“Yeah. Good thing I got an early start. I haven’t even had breakfast yet.”

“So, who hired him to beat you up?”

“Clayton Turner.”

“Clayton Turner? Why?”

“I’m getting to that. I hot-footed it over to his gallery after talking with Noa. After some posturing and blustering, Turner finally admitted he paid Noa to scare me off. Then he told me he did it because Brittany Glover asked him to get me out of town. She told Turner I was stalking her and had followed her here from Honolulu.”

“They know each other?”

“Yeah, Turner said he was in a relationship with Brittany a long time ago and almost married her. He claims they are still friends, and he promised her as a favor he would try to get rid of me.”

Cara applied more antibiotic ointment on Rick’s cut.

“I wish you would stop making a habit of this.”

“Why? It brings us closer together.”

Cara chuckled. “Right. So, anyway, did Clayton tell you where to find Brittany Glover?”

“He claimed he didn’t know where she is. Maybe he doesn’t. I couldn’t be sure if he lied about it, so it didn’t seem right to beat the truth out of him.”

“It’s probably a good thing you didn’t. Captain Everett and Clayton are friends.”

“Well, after hearing that, I sure am glad I didn’t call the police when Turner pulled the gun on me.”

“He pulled a gun on you?”

“Well, he tried, but he wasn’t very good at it, so I took it away from him.”

“Do you believe he told you the truth about not knowing where Brittany Glover is?”

“I’m not one hundred percent sure. But Turner said that even if he knew he wouldn’t tell me, so that sort of made me believe he didn’t know.
