One of the State Cabins set up for nighttime. This converts to a private lounge during the day with banquette style sofa and fixed chair, and one moveable chair. At night is becomes two single beds. A separate en suite shower, wash-basin and WC is provided.

The food and beverage is one of the highlights of an Oriental Express journey. Two restaurant cars, fitted out with rosewood and elm paneling, serve as the venues for lunch and dinner. Breakfast, on the other hand, is served on a tray in your compartment: there’s nothing like waking up to fresh croissants and fruit with tea or coffee after a sound night’s sleep swaying over the tracks.

In fact, the train is actually a hotel on wheels: It has all the conveniences of a hotel, but the added attractions of a movable feast. Each “room” is different; each excursion a new taste of the exotic. As if that were not enough, the operator has added two new itineraries: a two-night journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and a two-night trip from Bangkok to Vientiane in Laos. The former allows guests to see some of the ancient Siamese sights in comfort: there’s afternoon tea on a rice barge in the ancient capital at Auyuthaya, a walking tour of Chiang Mai, a horse-drawn carriage ride in Lampang and a cruise on the River Kwai. The latter takes in the Khmer monuments in Phimai, a World Heritage Site, and wine-tasting at Khao Yai.

Take a tip: in my opinion, the top spot is the open-air observation carriage at the rear of the train. Here you can feel the wind in your hair, savor the scents of the tropical air, wave at the kids on the side of the tracks—and watch the fireflies come out as night falls over the jungle. After a delicious dinner, it is the perfect place for a nightcap before you turn in.
