This was the original Spitfire’s 1.1-litre engine. In racing form, as campaigned at Le Mans, it produced well over 100 bhp, and was reliable for the full twenty-four hours of the contest.

The Spitfire was styled by Michelotti, and originally had a 63-bhp,1,147cc engine. Overdrive was optional, as was a hard-top, and it was a successful head-to-head competitor to the MG Midget of the period.

The reskinned Spitfire of the 1970s retained the basic outline of the original, but was more subtle in detail. This was the fifth derivative, the ‘1500’, and the hardtop was still an optional extra.
