“WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?”

“Nothing! And don’t even think about getting out of that bed!” Aaron called back from the kitchen of my apartment, making me smile.

“I meant to the wedding!”

“Hold on! I’m just finishing up in here!”

He’d been in my kitchen for the last thirty minutes or so. After having his morning smoke, he’d insisted on cooking me breakfast in bed.

“No problem! Take your time!” I sank back against my pillows, trying to relax, even though it was beyond trying to do that when I wasn’t the one in my kitchen cooking away. In fact, I’d never let anybody else in there. Not just that specific kitchen, but any kitchen I’d ever had over the years. Even when I’d been staying up at the clubhouse, I’d basically taken it over.

A curse from Aaron had me shooting bolt upright. “Are you okay, baby?”

“Fine!” he called back. “All good!”

“Are you sure?”

There was no response for several moments.

I tossed the covers aside and moved to climb out of bed.

But then the bedroom door flew open, startling me into inaction.

Aaron came into view carrying two trays of food. “What did I say?” He shook his head in reprimand.

It had me laughing. “Too cute,” I said, as I settled myself back under the covers and propped myself up comfortably against the mountain of pillows at my back.

“Cute?”

“Yeah, the whole thing. You being all faux strict with me, insisting on making breakfast in bed. Your chivalry is out in full force.”

He walked over to the bed. “You deserve to have somebody else cook for you for a change.” He carefully placed one of the trays across my lap, then settled himself beside me with his own. “I mean, I’m no chef, but I can guarantee it’s edible.” He snatched up a piece of bacon and chomped on it. “Damn, yeah, it really is.”

I laughed and took in everything he’d laid out on my tray.

He’d made a full-on fried breakfast complete with fried eggs, hash browns, grilled tomatoes, bacon, and sausage. He’d even provided a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice.

“Wow. This looks amazing, Aaron.”

“Don’t just look at it, darlin’. Give it a try,” he coaxed, amusement lacing his words at my awed reaction.

I obliged, tasting the egg and sausage with a little tomato as well. It was melt-in-your-mouth good. “A-Plus!”

He chuckled. “I’m honored, Lex. Means a lot coming from a big-shot chef.”

Big-shot chef. He was the sweetest.

I couldn’t believe I’d woken up to this today. To him, it was just breakfast. But to me it was bigger than that, a huge deal actually. He’d gone out of his way to make it and I could see what great care he’d taken with the presentation too. He’d thought of it all on his own without any coaxing from me. He’d just done it, such a sweet gesture.

I leaned in and kissed his cheek. “Thank you. This means more than you know.”

“No big deal.”

“No, it is. No one has ever cooked for me before. This is really special, baby.”

“You’re too easy, you know that?”

“Too easy?”

“Yeah, it doesn’t take much to please you.
