Ten days later, Shilat Simuso sat in his great hall with his spies. He turned to his counselor, Iriar. “You’ve heard their reports. Tell me what I should believe.”

The aged counselor trained his piercing gaze onto each of the spies until they all fidgeted. “They have told you the truth. This prophet from Trenara does things differently than the mel-mashtic.”

Simuso snorted so loud his nostrils shook. “I don’t need a sage to tell me that! How can I defeat Shilat Kanthus?”

Iriar fingered his iron staff. “To defeat Shilat Kanthus, you must first defeat Shilat David. Since the prophet arrived, Shilat Kanthus has grown great in power in a very short time.”

“How does one defeat a prophet?” Simuso fumed.

“It is hard. If Shilat David really does speak with Dalamar’s spirit, it will be very difficult, but not impossible.” Iriar paused to cough. His health was not good, but his mind was still keen.

Simuso waited for his sage to continue. To rush Iriar was to invite his wrath. To invite Iriar’s wrath was to invite disaster.

The old sage continued. “Who has seen this spirit of Dalamar? Several warriors. Rather than discredit their experience, redefine it. Say that Shilat David is a sorcerer. Dalamar’s spirit only walks at night, so say it is an evil spirit in the guise of Dalamar. If the spirit is evil, so is Shilat David. If Shilat David is evil, then so is Shilat Kanthus because he is in league with him. But this is not enough.

“Build fear into the mel-mashtic. What do they really know about this human from Trenara? How do they know he is human and not some other alien? He could be part of a great plot to overthrow us. Didn’t he go to the viralin first? Are not the viralin our enemies?”

Iriar coughed again. “Dalamar did speak of a prophet, but how do we know this is the one? The human could have been sent to test us … no, make it vital that we test him.”

Simuso picked his nose with a long thumbnail. “And how will we test him?”

Iriar struggled to clear his congested lungs. “I have heard that he is skinny and weak looking.”

“But they also say that he cut a circle into the hard ground with his weapon,” Simuso argued.

The sage worked his jaw and swallowed. “I believe the marvel of that lies in the weapon, not Shilat David. Send out another spy to study this weapon. If you can draw Shilat David into an unarmed fight, you should be able to kill him.”

Scraping his thumbnail against his armor, Simuso asked, “How do I do that?”

“Challenge him to a contest of strength. Say it is your way of proving he is not the prophet.”

Simuso pondered this. “Will it be enough?”

“Myute.” The sage grasped his iron staff to steady himself. “You need a story to tell, something to capture the imagination of the mel-mashtic. I will weave one for you.”
