CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER

The vaulted ceiling of Geddy’s room had to be at least five meters high. Windows nearly as tall overlooked the neatly manicured expanse of lawn and gardens while the city unfurled below like an expensive rug. Everything from the furnishings to the towels was obviously custom made and meticulously arranged, if not by Nandra herself then by someone under her direction. He couldn’t help but wonder how long it had been since anyone stayed there, say nothing of how many guest rooms they had in total.

All he really knew about the Temerurian economy was that in the wake of the Ring War, they’d become the galaxy’s largest supplier of tukrium. They believed the planet and its resources belonged to everyone, so its wealth was distributed to all. But this? This was old money. Royal money.

As much as he looked forward to eating real food, clinking glasses with a bunch of snooty Temerurians wasn’t exactly his idea of a good time. But if that’s what it took to get the Fiz patched up, so be it.

After a long shower and a shave, he found a set of clothes laid neatly across the bed. Perfectly tailored black slacks with a fitted shirt and mustard-colored tunic that had a bit of sheen to it. He expected to look utterly ridiculous, but as he squared up to the mirror, he was pleasantly surprised by the look.

“Not bad, eh?”

— It does suit you.

“Although, after free-balling it the past few days, I’m not sure I’m groovin’ on these pants. They’re a little tight in the crotch.” He adjusted himself a few different ways, unable to find a good position for his junk.

— It’s just for a few hours.

He sighed and dressed himself down. “High fashion comes at a price.”

— Oh, brother.

A soft rap came at the door, which was reflected in the mirror. “Come in!”

It was Tardigan, who had similar pants and a long blue robe gathered in a belt at the waist.

“Get a load of you, Professor.”

His face flushed. “Oz is almost ready. I didn’t dare go looking for the dining hall alone.”

“Ain’t that the truth.” Geddy tried rolling, then unrolling, then buttoning and unbuttoning the cuffs of his white shirt.

— Rolled.

— Are you sure?

Before Eli could respond, Tardigan’s hands were unbuttoning one of Geddy’s cuffs and rolling it up.

— You win this time.

After finishing the second cuff, Tardigan stepped back to get another look. “I must say, Captain, you clean up very well.”

“You, too. Like a scholar.”

He sank onto the edge of the bed with his head lowered. “Disgraced scholar, perhaps.”

This sad-sack BS was getting old fast. Geddy sat down next to him. “Doc, it’s time we had a little talk.”

“About what?”

“I don’t give two-thirds of a shit what you did before you came aboard. I’ve done things that would make your toes curl. I expect we all have.”

He showed his palms in contrition, shaking his head. “I’m sorry, Captain. I don’t understand.”

Geddy turned to face Tardigan, wincing at his pinched scrotum.
