Chapter Thirty-Three

Adrian kept checking the time on his pocket watch, impatiently waiting for it be 6:00 so he could go see how his wife was doing. Finally, his workday was done. He put things away and stepped outside. Even though it was dark, there was some activity out on the parade grounds. Soldiers and horses crisscrossed the grounds. Men sat smoking on the steps of the barracks, catching up on the day’s news. Adrian noticed Paula and Laura coming across the grounds towards him and he unconsciously gave them a nervous wave almost as if he was worried they might not see him.

“Hello, Adrian. Are you ready?”

“Please. Take me to Karen.”

The three of them made their way over to the infirmary. Inside they found the doctor tending to a few injured soldiers in one room and the next lay Karen. Seeing her, Adrian rushed over and took hold of her hand. “Oh, my precious darling. I’m here now. I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

She was asleep, but when she heard his voice, she opened her eyes and saw him standing next to Paula and Laura.

“Is that you Adrian? Are you here? Am I dreaming?”

“No, my love, it’s me. I’m here.” He held her hand tighter and kissed her fingers.

I am so glad to see you, Adrian! I feared I’d lost you forever.”

She smiled at Paula and Laura and told her sister, “You were right, Paula, when you said Adrian was coming.”

Paula laughed uncomfortably and admitted, “Well…I just said that. I didn’t know if it was true.”

Karen asked her husband, “How did you get here?”

“When we were on the Zephyr in the café car and the dust storm came, the lights eventually came back on and all of you were gone. I don’t know why I didn’t come with you. After spending many hours being upset about it, I got off the train in Omaha and called my friend who knows quite a bit about time travel.”

“What did he tell you to do?” Karen asked.

“He said that I needed to take an item of your clothing and go to the monument of the 100th Meridian Excursion Train and put my hands on it along with your clothes.”

Karen sat up uncomfortably.

“We’re going to need some crutches for you,” Adrian said.

“Go on with your story, honey.”

He helped adjust her pillows and told her, “I rented a car in Omaha and drove over to the marker. When I touched the stone, I found myself back here in this time. As luck would have it, the former telegraph operator here at the fort moved to Missouri so there was a job opening for me.”

In the next room, the doctor took the pulse of a sick soldier. Overhearing Adrian’s story, he walked to the door and looked at Adrian, Karen, Paula, and Laura with puzzlement trying to understand what he’d heard. Shaking his head, he returned his attention to the soldier.

Karen looked at her sister and asked, “Isn’t this something?!”

“It certainly is.”

“It makes you wonder
