The Deal

Herman met with Jay by teleconference.

“How did your meeting with Adam go?” Jay asked.

Herman flashed one of his rare smiles, "Well, Jay. Really well. We will get Hudson Bay project back online as soon as I can get the pipeline done – and power to the plants." Initially, the plant was to be powered by a coal generating power plant near the de-sal units, but now coal was banned in Canada as well as the United States. That was one fossil fuel they stopped immediately without any grace period.

“Jay, I need you to get some panels shipped to Wapusk Bay as soon as you can.”

“How many?”

Herman offered to send him the calculations. Three desalination plants would need about 2,500 Kilowatt-hours each, "You will need a ship, Jay – a big ship. And it has to be discreet right now. Adam is already clearing the site near the plants.

“Oh, and Jay, be sure it is wholesale.” There was another rare smile.

Jay was curious about the plans that Herman had. All he knew at this point was that Herman had wanted to acquire the facility and pipelines while the Hudson Bay was vulnerable. Diane would be able to be certain the remaining permits would be issued.

“Herman, even if you get the next leg of the pipeline done into Kansas, it will take years to build the rest of the infrastructure to distribute it throughout the west.”

Herman shook his head, "Think, Jay." After a brief pause, he continued, "Think. The infrastructure is already there."

Jay was puzzled.

“Come on, Jay. I just bought a huge network of oil and gas pipelines that crisscross the west. They all hub out of Kansas and run from the Dakotas to the Gulf.” He held up a map on the screen and traced some of the lines with his fingers. “See, look here.”

He moved his finger from Kansas to El Paso. “You see it?”

Jay did but still asked, “So once you get it to El Paso, you still need the distribution through the west.”

Herman shook his head and moved the map closer to the camera so it zoomed in on the four corners, "Distribution is already there. We have the line from El Paso to the Lake Powell region. Lake Powell is already designed as the source for the water down river. All of that distribution infrastructure as well as the legal agreements and such are in place. Pump everything we can into the lake and it will take it from there.”

He knew they could never pump enough to offset the losses caused by the drought but he could slow the impact. Water was essential to solving part of the food crisis.

Additional desalination plants were coming online along in Southern California. Combined they would be able to almost double the current food production.

While that was very positive, Jay also was aware that it would not be enough if global warming could not be reversed. Additionally, Jay was aware of how valuable access to the water would be. He saw Herman's vision.
