Later in the week, healing but still raw, Will was able to sit in the living room and have company over. He needed the pain pills, but feared what they might do to his digestive system. He needed food, but feared what might happen if it got stuck. Liquid and fiber were the only things he considered safe enough to have. He stopped eating meat partly because he’d always wanted to and partly because he imagined that by its texture alone it was more likely to grab on to something inside and hang on.

Early the next week Greg came over with a frozen pizza. It was the first time he’d been to Will’s apartment. Will’s roommate was out and Greg sat on the edge of the S shaped chair and talked to Will, who sat on one end of the sofa with a blanket draped across his legs. Greg burned the frozen pizza he’d brought with him. Will had looked at the sheet of bread and cheese with terror, afraid of what it might do to him.

It seemed, for the first time, that Will was more relaxed than Greg. Under a blanket and relaxed by a pain pill, he chatted with Greg easily. It occurred to Will that now they had something in common – an STD.
