“They have found it,” Alpha Trion said, in the solitude of his study.
Never had Dark Energon been put to use. Never had anyone seriously considered it. That was because Alpha Trion had scrubbed through the records in the DataNet and destroyed as much as he could find of the original expedition reports, filed by the scientific teams who had gathered and sequestered the Dark Energon long, long ago.
It was the one act in his life about which Alpha Trion felt deeply guilty. Never before or since had he destroyed records in the DataNet, but on this one occasion he had felt it was necessary. He had seen only dire consequences if the existence of Dark Energon was discovered.
Perhaps he was about to be proved wrong. Optimus Prime was demonstrating himself to be a stronger and more resilient leader than even Alpha Trion had dared hope. The early doubters in the Autobot faction were now firmly behind him—with the kind of passing quarrels natural to any command structure. Optimus Prime’s chosen circle of advisers might challenge his thinking or his tactics, but they never challenged his leadership. That was the only reason the war had lasted as long as it had, and Iacon had survived as long as it had.
Unless the Decepticons could harness Dark Energon without letting it destroy them. Then the return of the Primes would be the only thing that would save the Autobots—and Cybertron itself.
Optimus Prime and his cadre of trusted lieutenants—Prowl, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Jazz—were going to need some education about the nature of what they were up against. Then, in Alpha Trion’s opinion, they were going to need a stroke of good fortune. Perhaps several.
Apart from Optimus Prime’s able leadership, the best thing the Autobots had working for them was the tendency of Megatron to overreach. If they could encourage him to keep doing that, it was possible that he would destroy himself. Alpha Trion remembered how even the Primes were destroyed by some of their number who could not stop themselves from overreaching. Sometimes it seemed to him that the entire history of Cybertron was driven by individuals who demanded more than they were able to have, and turned their frustration into anger that drove them mad.
Now they fought over a planet missing its AllSpark, drained of much of its Energon, large parts of its surface laid waste … to the victor go the spoils, thought Alpha Trion sadly. All that will be left is the minds and Sparks of subjugated Cybertronians if the Decepticons have their way.
He got up to go meet the upstart leaders of the Autobot resistance. Odd, thought Alpha Trion. The forces that once were derided as tools of the oppressive hierarchy of caste and Guild now are the Undergound, the guerrilla resistance, the last hope of liberty fighting an oppressive hierarchy. War had a way of creating paradoxes like that. It could make enemies of brothers, murderers of lovers, heroes of the insignificant, and cowards of the mighty.
And that, mused Alpha Trion, was just if you took the Primes as examples.
