Gideon pulled into the parking lot of a dark bar in Anacostia Park, not far from where he dumped Libby into the river. His heart thundered with adrenaline and fear as he pondered the wild turn his life had taken since his last night on Draco.

“All I wanted was the good life,” he whined. “Now I’m in this shit hole and having to run for my life.” Suddenly his anger burst from his rigid jaws. “Damn you, Annie, you ruined my life. You deserved to die.”

He exhaled and rubbed his face. “Come on, get it together.” He was here at this miserable joint for his new identity, meeting a connection he made through his drug sales. The money, ten-thousand dollars for the new ID, five-thousand to rush the job, was bundled in twenties and fifties as he was instructed. He tucked the cash envelope in his jacket pocket and entered the bar.

It was dark. He stopped at the door to let his eyes adjust. The place was rank with the smell of spilled beer, stale cigarette smoke, and old vomit. His instructions said to go to the back and wait for a man wearing a cap that said Grandpa. Gideon sat at a table as instructed and ordered a beer. He pulled his phone out when he got a text message. He replied, Here in the back.

A man approached his table. Gideon was a healthy, conditioned man in his prime; the fellow wearing the Grandpa cap was twice his size easy, with biceps as big as Gideon’s thighs. He pushed the manila envelope of money towards the man. The envelope disappeared.

“You include photos inside?” The voice was deep and rumbling, the thick accent Russian.

Gideon nodded. “Rush, please.”

“Always rush,” the man answered. He looked at his watch. “Twenty-four hours. Watch for my text.”

Gideon, his heart beating uncomfortably fast, watched the Russian walk out. As soon as he got his new identity, he could book a ticket. He held his hand out; it was shaking.

“Damn you, Annie. This is all your fault.”
