Kim led the way into the backyard patio, appreciating how the nighttime vapors radiated the city’s electric colors. This added to Transcendence’s already pronounced futuristic feel, which she delighted in while sitting down.

“You okay?” she started, settling into one of the plastic white chairs.

“I’m fine,” Lea replied, sitting beside her. “Why do you ask?”

“You seemed a little upset in there.”

“I did?”

Kim nodded. “When Amy mentioned Chad’s murderous past, the look on your face said it all.”

Lea leaned back and inhaled the damp air. “I guess that escaped my attention. But now that you mention it, it doesn’t surprise me.”

“Why not?”

“Because I still can’t stand being around that prick. So maybe when Amy brought up his past, I unconsciously reacted.”

“That’s understandable. And because of that, I’m surprised you even came on this mission.”

“Because of Chad?” Lea crossed her arms over her blue sweater. “Believe me. I wasn’t happy about him coming along. I was even pissed at Eric for simply talking to him.”

“That caught me off guard too. And everyone else shares our disbelief… except for one person.”

Lea chewed this over. “Why is that? Why does Eric fail to view Chad like we do—as a threat?”

“If I can venture a guess, it’s because they’re more alike than people realize.”

Lea tightened her face and looked over.

“Don’t worry,” Kim said with a smile. “You’re not dating Victor Vane all over again. Chad and Eric have differences, and they’re critical, like Chad murdering people when he’s angry, and Eric merely moping.”

Lea smiled back and returned her attention towards the city. “So what similarities did you mean?”

“They both know what it’s like to lose purpose.” Kim leaned back. “To some people, a profession isn’t simply a paycheck, it’s an identity—a measurement of one’s value. Eric lost this, and Chad never got a chance to experience it. And in this hardship, they share common ground.”

“I see what you’re saying. And who knows? Maybe Eric views Chad as one of his Sunrise clients. And while I would normally commend Eric for wanting to help, in this instance, I wish he would suggest physician assisted suicide.”

Kim laughed. “I don’t think that’ll happen. So, we’ll simply have to keep monitoring them both.”

Lea grinned. “And speaking of Eric, why didn’t things work out between you two? If you don’t mind me asking.”

“He didn’t tell you what I did?”

“Yeah. He said you were seeing someone else. But I don’t like to judge first and then find out the circumstances later. If it’s cool, I’d like to hear your side of it.”

Kim took a breath. Now she truly regretted facilitating Lea’s murder. “Well, for a long time, Eric and I had an amazing relationship, but we slowly drifted apart.”

“Because of his displacement? I heard he detached from the world after that.”

“That perpetuated the drift, but it would’ve happened anyway.”

“Why?”

“Because in college, we were the perfect couple. But beyond that, we’re very different people. I’m interested in the future, along with accelerating its arrival. Eric’s not. And while that’s okay, the difference made our post-college relationship challenging.
