In my eyes, the appointment went well from start to finish. I went in, gave a clear explanation of why I felt transgender, answered her questions, and told her exactly which clinic I wanted to be referred to.

She even told me she had experience dealing with trans patients, so I thought nothing could go wrong. It did. She ignored everything I gave her and once again referred me to the same mental health clinic as the previous doctor.

Furious, I demanded to speak to her on the phone and firmly told her that I was not required to go through a mental health clinic for an assessment, and that I would have to do one anyway when I got to the specialist clinic. Ignoring everything I said and the evidence I had provided, the doctor stuck with her decision and the call ended. This time there was no stopping me. I was determined to get on hormones even if I had to go through every goddamn doctor in the United Kingdom.

So yet again, I booked another appointment with another general practioner. Guess what? The third time was the charm. He listened to me and finally I was referred to the clinic I’d hoped for. It took another three months to get my first appointment there, which was with a psychotherapist. She explained that throughout my transition, I’d have ongoing appointments with her to talk about anything I wanted.
