Modifications

Modifications are movement options that allow individuals to adapt exercises to an appropriate level. The range of options you offer will vary with the type and level of the class, but, generally, classes require a multi-level teaching approach. Individuals differ in skills and fitness levels, as well as in specific fitness parameters, such as flexibility at a particular joint, so classes must be planned accordingly. When teaching healthy properly screened populations, most modifications for aerobic training are designed to adjust the movement intensity, complexity, or impact. More fit and skilled individuals can adapt group movements to be appropriately challenging, yet safe, by selecting from the modifications offered. The choreographic building technique, layering, is particularly effective for generating options within an aerobics sequence. It is important to provide a visual model of the various modifications and not remain just at one level. Additionally, as special populations mainstream into regular classes, you will need to be familiar with participants’ health histories to offer more specific modifications.

Modifying for Intensity

Movement intensity is based upon “how much body mass must be moved how far in what amount of time” (Clippinger, 1993). Because the center of weight and the greatest mass exist in the lower body, modifications involving the lower body will normally have the greatest impact on intensity. Incorporating intensity-monitoring techniques and eliciting feedback will ensure that individuals make appropriate choices in modifications designed to adjust intensity (Figure 3.3a).
