Chapter Nine

Trace relaxed his fisted hands and fought the urge to pummel Crypto.

A heavy hand fell on his shoulder. “You have to return to the pool party before anyone becomes suspicious and thinks you’re involved in Lily’s disappearance.” Hack released his hold. “I’ll stay here with her.”

At the mention of her name, she looked away from them. Arms crossed under her breasts, she blinked rapidly. If possible, she appeared even more beautiful with her mane a wild tangle and dirt-smudged cheeks.

“You go,” he told Hack.

“Uh...” His teammate glanced at Lily. “You think that’s wise?”

“She needs to know the truth.” Brother, I do not plan on leaving her behind. “The best way is to show her.” She needs to know who and what I am before deciding to accept my offer.

Lily took a step forward. “The truth would be nice. I already figured you’re not Donovan Katu. Are you here to stop Pete?”

Trace linked his nanobots with Hack’s and transferred the transformation schematics required for his form.

She gasped and stumbled against the table behind her. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the edge.

Hack’s skin slowly morphed, changing his appearance until Trace was facing an exact replica. The link between their nanos released once the transformation program was complete.

Hack inspected his new face in a mirror. “This is stupid. I’m not an information specialist.”

“You don’t need to find out anything. Have a drink and mingle. Keep the conversations focused away from you. People love to talk about themselves.” Trace removed his bathing suit and handed it to Hack.

Lily gasped and her cheeks turned a pleasing shade of pink.

“Leave me alone with her so I can explain.” He mentally spoke to Hack.

“Wear this and no shirt. It’s proper attire for such an event.”

The other male changed. “What if Pete questions me?”

“Act drunk. Better yet, have your nanos increase your alcohol levels and be drunk.”

“Nanos.” Lily’s whisper silenced them. Her face paper white.

Hack clapped Trace’s back. “Good luck.” Then he left.

He barely heard his teammate’s words. “Lily.” He stretched out his hands to her.

She flinched. “Can you change your body too?”

“Yes.” He took a small step closer, approaching her as if she were a frightened animal. One with teeth who could rip out his heart, except she only needed words.

She furrowed her brow. “Then how do I know it’s really you?”

He moved, fast and sure, pinning her to the table so she wouldn’t flee the beach house.

She stiffened but didn’t scream. His brave, beautiful human.

Slowly, he lowered his mouth to hers. The kiss soft yet urgent. He shook with need, but he had scared her enough. Now, he had to earn her trust back.

At first, her mouth lacked any response. By the third pass, her lips met his with as much enthusiasm.

He pulled back. “It’s always been me. I’d never let anyone else touch you.”

Her bottom lip trembled.

The slight movement triggered his predatory instinct, drawing his focus to her lips. He ran the pad of his thumb over the lush, soft skin. “Don’t fear me.
