Lexi and I pull our suitcases toward our room. Trevor and she already had a sweet goodnight kiss in the parking lotâwell, it went further than sweet, to be honest, but I looked away at that point. Then Trevor decided to escort us to our room so he could help Lexi get settled in with Poppy.
Watching Trevor and Lexi kindles a longing in my heart. They have community, friendships, one another, and now a new family. I love all that for them. Still, the stark contrast between each aspect of their life and mine pricks at me.
Trevor swipes Lexiâs keycard for her.
âLetâs get you three settled.â
He leads the way into a room where two queen beds fill most of the space. The gaudy geometric-patterned polyester comforters look like they may have been original to the hotel. The carpet sends the message: take your shoes off at your own risk. Itâs clean, but at a level of overuse that canât be restored no matter how many times a vacuum runs over it.
I take a breath and walk to the window. Outside we have a view of the parking lot and street with a strip mall across the way.
âThe beautiful view from a motel when my dad is in charge of booking. Budget could be his middle name,â Trevor says.
âItâs fine,â I tell him.
Seems like Iâve said the word fine a lot over the past four hours throughout the drive up as Aidenâs understandable anxiety filled the cab of the truck. My mind is on bigger things: meeting Aidenâs cousinâs children, what happens when they move in, how much longer I have in Bordeaux, and when I can tell Aiden about Buck and the fact that Iâm not dating or married to anyone.
That last thought dominates over the rest, but it obviously has to wait.
Once a portable crib is assembled, Trevor leaves to settle into his room. Poppy stirs as if on cue. Lexi nurses her, and then I sit on the edge of my bed rocking Poppy while Lexi changes and brushes her teeth.
âYouâre precious,â I coo at Poppy. âAnd you have the prettiest little fingers.â
I lift her hand and she closes it around my pointer, squeezing an unbidden smile from me.
âI wonder what youâll be like as you grow up. Will you be a girly girl, or a tomboy?â
She yawns. Her tiny features scrunch and her mouth goes wide. Iâm mesmerized.
I start humming a song. The words come to me, so I start to sing.
âToo-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra-Loo-ra-loo-ra-li â¦â I continue singing and rocking, studying Poppyâs features and losing myself in the sweetness of her baby smell and whatever magic babies have that makes them irresistible.
When my head lifts, Lexiâs leaning in the doorway between the bathroom and our room with a soft smile on her face.
âYou sing as beautifully as you play piano.â
âThank you.â
âI canât sing, but I sure love to anyway,â Lexi says.
I chuckle. âYou canât be that bad.â
She snorts. âOh. No. I am. Iâm like the abandoned love child of a hyena and a screech owl, but once I take on a song, Iâm all in.
