Chapter 9

John could go fuck himself. It had been three days since he’d made his deal with SARA and I still hadn’t left his house, much less Alaska. The shifty fucker kept evading the issue, distracting me with sex every time I wanted to leave. It was infuriating, mostly because it worked.

On the plus side, the cable TV, internet, and landline were all up and working, though the internet was so slow as to be practically useless. I tried calling Jake first, but it went straight to voicemail. My mom, on the other hand, picked up on the second ring. She was happy to hear from me, and relieved to find out that John had taken care of everything. Once I was done updating her on everything going on, I started venting.

“I’m sure he just likes having you to himself, sweetie,” my mom said, amused and not at all sympathetic. “Think about it. Do you really want to share him with the rest of the world yet?”

I bristled at her tone. How could she be on John’s side in this?

“I have been sharing him, Mom. That’s the whole problem. He keeps leaving to do things and not telling me what it is. It’s not fair that he gets to keep me locked up in the middle of nowhere while he does whatever he wants.”

My mom just didn’t get it. I didn’t want to keep John to myself, at least not entirely. I wanted him to meet her, and Jake, and even my stodgy grandfather, who would have a stroke and a heart attack if he found out who John really was.

“I just wish he took me seriously.” I closed my eyes and leaned back against the couch, dejected.

John had said he would treat me like an equal, but then he’d gone right on treating me like I was something he had to handle. Like he was the chairman and CEO of our relationship rather than an equal partner.

My mom was quiet for a few seconds, and when she spoke she sounded wary. “Is he actually keeping you there against your will, Brady? I mean, if you try to leave, does he stop you?”

I was startled by the way my mom framed the question. John was my spark; of course he wasn’t keeping me prisoner.

“No. He just… distracts me whenever he thinks I want to leave the house.” I blushed at the memory of John’s latest distraction. Then I decided that my mom was not the one I should be having this conversation with. “Do you know what? I should be talking to John about this. I just need to be firm with him. How about we come over to your house for dinner this weekend?”

“I would love that, sweetie. And don’t be afraid to stand up to John. He’s your spark, not your boss. Just because he’s older doesn’t mean that he gets to make all the decisions. I can’t wait to see you again. Tell John I said hi.”

“I will,” I promised, hanging up and letting the phone drop down on the floor next to me.
